Free genealogy sites or software?

HELP!!!! i've been trawling through the copius amounts of sites only to discover that once you've entered your search parameters you have to register your credit card details...

I'm stuck at a crucial point trying to locate burial records and marriage certificates. I'm trying to discover more about my grandfather who came to the UK after leaving Switzerland, so far all i know is his orginal surname before changing it in order to join the British army around the 1940's.

If anyone knows of any free sites or software that would make it easier to trace burial records, marriage certificates and possibly immigration records i'd be grateful.

Thanks

Have you tried looking on Freebmd

They haven't transcribed all the records yet but it may give you a start.

    www.cyndislist.com

Cyndi has spent over 10 yrs collecting genealogical resources.

www.familysearch.org is the "grandpa" of genealogy sources, since it is associated with the LDS faith. Their software is free, and very usable. It does not claim to do research for you.. and I don't exactly trust sites or software that does make that claim anyway. LDS church members have been doing genealogy since before I was born.. (hint..the gray hair in the avatar is appropriate). Their submitted files come from members, and are subject to the same mistakes you'll find elsewhere.

I haven't worked UK much.. but www.genuki.com seems to be scholarly, not commercial.

Commercial sites "come up" more, simply because they advertise more, and people want it fast and easy. If they offer good service for the money, cool.. but there are tons of other sources. There was research before the internet (and ancestry.com).

I think there's only so much you can discover without spending a bit on looking at records - I did all the free stuff first but didn't get very far, but when you pay for credits at any of the big sites, you do get further. The best free site is probably the Mormon one - Familysearch.org

    Good luck!

I am afraid I didn't read all of your question until I wrote my answer. So I am going to leave you the links anyways, they are more pertinent to North America. Perhaps you will need them in the future, or perhaps you can direct others to these sites who the same as you are looking up their family trees.

Ellis Island - Immigrant Landings - Free searches with manifests, etc.

1940's is too early for free data, as it is protected by law until it is 100 years old.

Your best bet is to physically go to the parish archive where he was married, died, and look through the original copies. Its free to do, but you have to book a microfisc reader if you neeed to go back in time.

once you get back to 1890, it gets much cheaper to do, and many of the resources are free, but they are also transcribed, so prone to error. Thus you have to always go to the original source to do the work yourself.

If your spouse says "I have fallen out of love with you" don't panic. It doesn't mean your marriage is over. It doesn't even mean they don't love you. How to get your spouse to love you again https://tr.im/o3hZz

What it does mean is that your spouse has lost their way, or doesn't understand the many stages love and a relationship goes through.

You are being called to take charge of the situation, guide your spouse towards understanding this process, and even begin to rekindle your relationship.

The key to success is in understanding what is happening in your marriage and the role that love plays. It's very easy for us to connect losing the feelings of being in love with actual loving when it is not really the case.
