Anyone know who wrote the story about a guy who was trying to quit smoking?

This story was in a movie back in the mid/late 70s. (the link to the different stories in the movie was a cat walking from one story to another, if that helps)

A guy goes to a stop-smoking office and the manager tells the smoker that he must sign a contract that he won't ever smoke again. The smoker signs, then goes about his business, and whenever he snuck a cig, something bad would happen. He talked to the guy who recommended him, and noticed the recommender's wife only had 3 fingers on one hand.

Does this story ring a bell for anyone? I was telling my daughter about it and she said she would like to read it. I thought it may have been an early Steven King story, but I wouldn't know where to find it.

Thanks in advance! :)

Definitely Stephen King. Don't remember what collection of short stories it was in.

Edit: Found it. "Night Shift." Check the link.

Edit: This story is for grown-ups. Don't recommend it to your daughter unless your daughter is an adult.

Apart from asking us our opinions, this isn't the right place to post content like this, one of the reasons blogs were created is for an outlet like this. Yahoo's new profile pages (replacing the 360 service) has an option, as do many other services on the internet at large. Is this current or was this from a few years ago and you're recalling it now? Writing about this, you definitely need help from someone who is capable of assisting you, because apart from spell check that you can do yourself, you need help with editing and paragraph layout. Who else have you told and basically you describe yourself being seriously assaulted, have the police and other authority figures been brought in? you should also write about that, all the events both before and after what you wrote here. When I was at school many years ago my English teacher said write about what you know but if this had happened to me I wouldn't have written this for anyone. In "Additional details" you ask about part II, but this is only part of a much bigger story that you want to tell... you seem to have missed many other important details like when was this and what has happened since.

Stephen King wrote the book of short stories with that story in it. "Quitters, Inc." and "The Ledge" were in his book Night Shift. If I remember correctly, "The General" was written for the movie.

The part that you are refering to was called "Quitters Inc.",about Mr Morrison (James Woods) who goes to a very unconventional place to quit smoking. Then there is"The Ledge",about a washed-up tennis player (Robert Hays) who is forced to walk around the ledge of a hotel by a rich mobster after the tennis player steals his wife. And finally there is "The General",which involves a cat saving a little girl (Drew Barrymore) from a tiny goblin that comes in the night to take children's souls. The three stories are linked together by a cat that traverses from New York to Atlantic City to North Carolina.

    Hope that helps!

This is a short story from the 50s that was put on one of the old shows, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits or one of those. The 70s version was a remake. Might have been Stephen King, but I think it is older than that.

The movie is called "Cat's Eye" - based on some short stories by Stephen King -- the particular sequence you're referring to was written as the short story "Quitters, Inc"

I believe the film's stories were all off his "Night Shift" anthology.
