What is the song "Breath" by Breaking Benjamin about?

I have studied the lyrics of the Breaking Benjamin song "Breath". I am so confused. What is this song supposed to be about. There seem to be so many opposed emotions. Help!

    It's about a tamultuous and unhealthy relationship where they go back and forth of breaking up and getting back together. He cares deeply for this girl and he can't break away, he can't let her go because if he does he loses her, if he doesn't he remains unhappy. And with every word she makes towards him she's hurting him more "Pouring salt into the open wound"

    He wants to be the thing she changes for, the thing she becomes a new person for, he wants her to open up and show him what's really inside her....he knows there's love there, he knows there's a good person but everytime he looks into her eyes all he sees is this vancant ugly thing there, and he doesn't know why he loves her but he does.

    All relationships take a fight, they take work and effort, sacrafice and commitment. And even the most tamultuous relationships need to be worked at. Esp. those that are tamultuous

    I think the link songmeanings.net could help you understand the song but In my opinion, I think he loves and hates her at the same time
