1979, Phillips and Sony were in need of a new medium for storing audio songs and hence formed a joint team lead by Immink and Doi to design this medium and then came into existence this genius thing called the Compact Disc.
the first commercial disc was available from 1982 and from then till today it has been the most used medium for data storage.
Sony and Phillips are still the largest makers of the CDs.
Its future is already very much into existence as the DVD. the most expected newer techie is the Blue Ray Disc.
