(7a+3)+(-a-5)= -16
Open the brackets,
7a+3-a-5 = -16
Add all liketerms,
6a-2 = -16
6a = -16 + 2 = -14

If you wrote the problem correctly, the answer is
- 2.3333333333333333333333333333333
Here is the proof;
(7a + 3) + ( -a - 5) = -16
6a + 2 = -16
6a = -14
a = -14 / 6
a = -2.3333333333333333333333333333333

First remove the parentheses
7a + 3 + -a + -5 = -16
Reduce
6a + -2 = -16
Now add 2 to each side
6a = -14
Divide both sides by 6
a = 14/6
Reduce
a= -7/3 or -2 1/3 or -2.3333

(7a+3)+(-a-5)= -16
7a + 3 -a - 5 = -16
6a - 2 = -16
6a = -14
a = -14/6
a = -7/3
All the best

1. Collect terms:
6a = -14
2. Divide through by 6 and reduce.
a = -7/3
