You can use Nature's Miracle to clean the spots or make a paste of borax and water, agitate, let dry and vacuum up. Nature's Miracle is a natural enzyme which eats up the bacteria in urine, it is a liquid you spray on and blot up. You can find it at the discounters or pet stores. Both remove most pet stains equally well but if they are old, I would opt for Nature's Miracle because it removes set in stains (ones that soaked into the padding) a little better than Borax with less effort.

Since they appear to be old, it's not likely that they can be completely removed.

You can use a suds of water and dish soap. (That won't leave a soap film to attract dirt).

Use a sponge and blot the suds into the carpet until fairly wet. DO NOT RUB the pile. It will frizz the tips of yarn.

Blot the area completely with the suds.

Use clear water, cold, not warm, to clean out the suds. Repeat if it has any success.

When finished, blot as much moisture as you can with a towel, then place a folded towel over the area with a weight, leave for a few hours or longer.. The towel will wick up any remaining moisture.

If the entire carpet has stains spread about, this may be too much effort, but if it works, maybe so.

You will have a "cleaner" spot doing this.

Again, if old, even professional cleaning may not work. Urine contains acid and can destroy the color.

If you decide to use a cleaning co., ServPro is one of the best. When they know what the stain is, they are usually successful. Maybe not in this case.

I have no interest in the co., used them in my own business.

Unfortunately you may have to spend the money to replace or at least hire a professional cleaner. Stains on carpet usually soak through to the padding underneath therefore they will return later when you walk on the particular areas that were stained. Check with a carpet installer and see how much it would cost, it will be well worth it in the end. In other words clean it now and later and later...or replace now.

Then the only thing you can do is pull up the carpet and get new ones. Or you could try some OxyClean and a bucket of water. There are directions on the package on how to use it as a carpet cleaner. But in all reality, I think you will need to get rid of the carpet.

I would highly suggest getting your carpet cleaned by a professional. Pet Stains leave a protein in your carpet that needs to be broken down in order to take away the stain and odor. Since I did this, I think you should consider it, too. pull up the carpet and replace the flooring underneath, because that's stained, too, and you'll never get an animal to not go there because of it.

On the other hand, if you have no pets, just get a steam clean company to do it.

If it is spots here and there , use Woolite Oxy II (it is in a blue spray bottle )for rugs and upholstery .

I had old pet stains and marker and cola stains that the carpet cleaner could not get out . Spray will let it set for a while ,you should see lightening right away .

No matter what you do it will always come back. It is in the pad I would say new carpet or a new pad.
