Actual tennis shoes were made for tennis, and the shoes WE call tennis shoes today, are actually, literally, sneakers, which were called that because they were first worn by burglars. Shoe names are literal, but lose meaning in translation.

Maybe its not what tennis has to do with shoes, but what shoes have to do with tennis. Think about that one.

They were made during a time in which tennis was popular and it was a selling technique. The design was for tennis playing.
