How many books do you read per year? According to a recent poll, 1 out of 4 Americans read no book this year.

Who finds this pathetic?

I'll average about 24 a year. But then I buy a bunch of books I never finish either and I've got a big pile of "to be read" too.

Your finding is not surprising though. There has never been a large readership in America. We don't emphasize education in this country and mock those who are.

But those who do read love it and keep B&N, Amazon, and Borders in business. Heaven knows they get a good chunk of my income a month.

That is pretty sad that there are so many people in the US that don't take the time to enjoy a good book. I suppose they're all too busy "doing important things", or are the kind of people who'd prefer to wait till it comes out as a movie.

I don't know how many I've read, I've probably read around 56-60 so far this year. I tend to buy a lot of books also, but I also re-read books that are my favourites from time to time. So while I'm well on my way to having read over 100 books at least this year, I may well have read a few of those books a number of times.

I read an average of 4-5 books a month- depending on the genre I can read 10, but I'm going to stick with averages- so, shooting low, I read about 48 books a year.

I don't find it pathetic that other people don't read, I understand that other people don't have the same interests that I do and aren't interested in reading, or possibly don't have the time to read. I'm sure plenty of them are much better at many other things than I am.

i read 20 to 40 books a year if i can find good books. however, there are at least 5 to 6 books i re read yearly.

as to your other question, i dont think the poll is accurate. i think its more like 2 out of 4 people read NO books per year. the poll should not include books required for work or study, only for personal enjoyment and self improvement.

As a future language arts teacher I found this poll very sad, but i understand why. I remember when I was in school we were told what books were good books and what was considered crap, and today's kids have it no different. My son was told that the Harry Potter series was a horrible display of literature, and that he shouldn't waste his time. In my opinion, if you can get an eleven year old kid out from in front of the tv long enough to WANT to read an 800 page book, then don't spoil it.

Maybe if so many adults wouldn't have been forced to read Lord of the Flies and Catcher in the Rye they would find reading more enjoyable.

Yes, it is pathetic. I used to read a lot more than I do now, because I have a lot of other activities than I did, but I still read between 50 and 60 books per year.

I do. Very. I am an author and yet my own mother and son haven't read a single book this year - not even one of mine. I don't let it get to me.

But it heartens me to know that there are many people who DO read.

Persoinally when I am able to, I try to read a book a day. However when I am busy like now, I manage a few chapters at night and it takes me like two days to read a book. I would say I average maybe 250 or 275 books a year. I buy all of them - I hate library books. My personal library is busting at the seams and I am trying to figure out how to find space for more books in it. Pax - C

I read sooo much a read about a book or two a week (long books) because i love reading. i think its pathetic that so many people dont read and just rely on TV for entertainment. Most peoples excuse id that they dont have time to read but honestly if u take 10 mins before you go to bed that would be better than nothing

I read about 3 books a month, so 30 per year.

I find it pathetic, but I'm also not surprised. My step son told me that he doesn't need to read because there is TV & movies. I couldn't believe that. In responce I changed the language settings on the movies & added subtitles & blocked all the English Speaking channels on the TV.

As for books. I have a large pile of books in my "to read" bookcase and I read about 200 books a year.
