Are you sure it's the float? I'm a Mustang guy myself. I've got a '65 2+2 289, and a '69 convertible 302. Check the wiring over the tank. It gets corroded and breaks inside the insulation. If you have the float assembly out, you can put an ohmmeter on the float terminals and see if it is working just by moving the float. If the float is disintegrated, you can get one at a junk yard. Any FORD around that year has the same float. Falcon, Fairlaine, Maverick, Cougar. Not too hard to get. The whole assembly would probably fit!

i recently had to fabricate a float for a 56 olds.i removed the in tank assy out of a later model car then cut the rod holding the float about three inches from the float.then i cut the float off the one i was using; right at the float.then i positioned the later model float where it would work best, clamped it with visegrips then soldered it together, installed it. checked functionality. then cracked open a cold beer... : )

Source(s): these improvisions come from the depths of my mind. i've been a pro mechanic for 30+ years.

I can't remember what the name of the magazine but it is a Mustang magazine focused on Mustang owners. It is full of parts companies that specialize in Mustang parts. Also you might try a wrecking yard. That is kind of a gamble though. Good luck!
