Guardianship is the right to make all decisions for someone who is unable to make decisions for themselves.

The only real benefit I can see from it, would be peace of mind in knowing that your daughter's best interests will be handled by you. That is if your daughter is not capable of making those decisions for herself.

Every disabled child has different needs. You need to take a serious look at your daughter's ability to make decisions for herself. Depending on level of her disability will decide what the right decision is.

It is a huge responsibility to become your child's guardian. Really not much different than being her parent but your child may not be in your home anymore so you may not physically present as much as you are now.

If your daughter is unable to make decisions for herself, you must become her guardian. It is pretty simple to do.You can get the form on line, and file it with a letter from her Doctor, at the courthouse in your county.

My child is autistic and when he was going to turn 18 the school recommended we file for guardianship.I don't know of any pitfalls in becoming your child's guardian.
