Question for TEACHERS AT SECONDARY: What is a 'waiver'?

I am not sure it is spelt 'waver', or waiver' but I have been told that it is the system by which students are selected into 'sets' according to their academic performance.

If it is not called a 'waiver' what is it called officially? Thank you!

It is called tracking putting students into classes by academic performance. A waiver is a paper saying you "waive" or give away a right or mandate. For example you could get a waiver for Physical Education if you are physically unable to participate.
