What's the best way to pick up UNIX skills?

I'm particularly interested in spending as little as possible. What's involved in the process also?

Download the free Ubuntu distribution and just start getting into the Ubuntu forums. There are other free distros, but this one is as easy to install as Windows.

You download one and install it on your computer. They're all easy to install nowadays, and co-exist with Windows easily and peacefully. You have many, many distributions to choose from; Fedora, Suse, Mandriva, Gentoo, Mandriva and about a million others to choose from. Best thing is, they're ALL FREE. Look them up and see which one might fit you the best. If you don't like what you downloaded, download another one.

i would say download ubuntu, and then have a play and see what you can do

I use ubuntu now ( i use it as my primary operating system)

It is very easy to use however installing applications is a bit more advance but now that I have had a play i find it easy

the best thing to do is have a go and a play

    Thanks

There are free flavors of UNIX or Linux that are free, and you can find a lot of resources for learning them online. Check out FreeBSD.
