Difference between Homeline & QO panels from Square D?

I'm building a new house and will put in an outdoor feed through main breaker box w/8 spaces for AC, barn power, generator transfer switch, etc.

Square D offers a Homeline version (HOM816M200FTRB) or the QO version (QO1816M200FTRB). Is there a major difference between the Homeline & QO lines? I know the breakers fit different but is the QO any better for residential use? Price difference for the panel is $27 from my supplier. What I'd really like is the meter/main combo for aesthetic reasons but what gives with the price... over $100 more for the meter combo and I can get the separate meter socket free from the electric co.!

I will then install a 30 space sub panel inside for the house branch circuits. Same question, is QO better than Homeline for my application?

Also, I can actually get a main breaker panel cheaper than a main lug, is there any downside to having the second main breaker at the sub?

Thanks in advance... 10 points for the best answer - GO

Update:

I should add that my indoor panel will be 25+ feet from the meter, which is why I need a cut-off outside.

Looking around the web I also find a GE version of the meter/main (TSM420CSCU) and a Seimens version (MC0816B1200RCT) that appear to be similar the the Square D (QC816F200C) for around $150, while the Square D is about $200. Any opinions on these would be appreciated also. I'd sure like to keep it all in one panel and might be willing to pay another $50 over the price of just the panel but probably not $100. I found a Murray for even less, but it only has 4 breaker spaces compared to the 8 the others have.

Homeline is square D's cheaper, residential version. The QO series is better quality. The parts are not interchangeable, so once you pick your system you are stuck with it. I have worked with both, and the QO stuff is easier to do, the cutouts are better, the design is superior. The breakers are better, don't fail as often, and have a higher blowout rating. If it were me, I would spring for the QO, but the homeline is NOT unsafe. this is purely a "how is your bank account" kind of choice.

I have always gone with the Square D and have not seen the HOMline in my Electric Supply . Cheaper is my only suspicion

QO can be found almost anywhere and I suspect Homline is not.

If you are going to get a meter pan/main breaker combination then you don't need a Main breaker in your main load center. (you have to go to your meter panel to turn off your main (which is where your transfer switch will have to be located) [out in the weather?]

Take your free meter pan (at least 200 amps), get your Main Breaker (QO) Panel [indoor version] and run everything including you sub-panels from there.

    Good Luck ! ! !

Homeline is basically the economy panel by Square D for your own home I would go with the Square D-QO the difference in price is worth it for reasons already stated.
