Smoking ban in pubs. Another small victory?
Another victory was won last night (Saturday) in a London pub against the Smoking Ban in pubs when one drunk lighting a cigarette prompted a spontaneous demonstration of people power when he was asked to leave by the door staff. He was very quickly surrounded by 20 other people, all strangers, who quickly lit up cigarettes to join him. Word quickly spread within the local area and by the time the Police arrived there was close to 80 people all smoking and drinking in the pub.
The Police very wisely decided to withdraw and advised the landlord not to prevent people smoking as it was likely to cause a breach of the peace. The landlord was very happy with this news as his pub had not been this busy on a Saturday night since long before the ban and very quickly produced a whole box of stored ashtrays. A GREAT NIGHT WAS HAD BY ALL!!!
Have you had this happen in your area yet? How long can this stupid law survive if people decide to act together with total strangers in this way? It was fantastic to witness and be a part of.
What I find interesting is there really does seem to be a sense of community spirit among smokers where total strangers are prepared to stand together in a common cause. It would be very good if this spirit could spread to other areas of life as it seems everyone is just out for themselves these days.
Oh! And a very big well done to the Rolling Stones during the O2 concert. Nice one guys.
Logic316 - Actually I think you will find that the Police are under orders not to intervene. They do not want this to get into the media and keep it as quite as possible or this may start happening up and down the country. They are trying to convince people just how popular the law is. So, I think that SWAT would just stay for a beer.
Yes? As opposed to your great example of sit there and live in a Police state providing it does not affect you personally. I know which side I would rather be on. Its people like you that have caused all the problems in the first place. Damm Liberals.

Oh maybe they will die soon, and rid the planet of their pollution.
Hopefully someone will go plant a scared skunk in their homes and let them enjoy that smell and pollutants.

Normally I would agree with you when you object to the Government over legislating and complaining that we are becoming a "Nanny State." However in this case I feel the smoking ban is right. Why should I get cancer because you want to smoke where I happen to be working or socialising?

I love it when a community join forces and pull together, but as a none smoker who has had to passive smoke on many occasion i was happy when the smoking ban came in, but i would have been happy if it had been up to the individual landlord so there were pups for smokers AND pubs for us none smokers fair for everyone

I'll answer with a story: when this passed in Georgia a bar, which I shall call "Joe's," initially complied. He lost business because, after all, a lot of people smoke in bars and don't wish to step outside to do so. Joe, being a smart guy, decided to hire a spotter whose only job was to look for police, and another couple who trolled the crowds looking for complainers. We'd go in and smoke, drink, whatever, and when the lights would blink all smokes were stubbed out and ashtrays sat on while we looked innocently at the officers. Once a lady swore up and down we were smoking and, yes, the scent of nicotine was clearly in the air but there was not even a pack of matches in sight. This is probably still going on to this day, but while I participated I was on of about 120 people doing this. See the power of nicotine?

Great example these people set for their kids. No wonder there's no respect the law & scum rule the streets.
EDIT: PMSL it's hardly a police state & it does affect me personally, so I go outside. If I didn't smoke I wouldn't want to breath in someone else's inside a pub & rightly so.
I think it should have been left to the pub owners themselves to decide about their own pub, but it wasn't, so deal with it.

I thought this "smoking ban" was supposed to increase the amount of customers, unwilling to go to the pub, due to all the nasty smokers.WELL my local has been virtually empty since the ban!!!
I think non-smokers are self righteous little slugs.
I would quit, if I didn't think I would become like them.

They have the right to smoke, and if someone does not want to be in a place where people smoke then they do not have to go there.
As for the government making these stupid laws. If smoking is that bad why do they not ban it.
The reason why is the tax on the cigarettes.

This is precisely why the U.K. needs a SWAT team and more riot police. Business owners and local cops are completely helpless when faced with such organized criminal activity.
