What is that vibrating noise that comes from having one car window rolled down? It hurts my ears!?

It happens when you're driving on the freeway and there is only one rear window partially rolled down but it stops when another one is cracked. I'm guessing it has to do with pressure since it happanes in many four-door cars I've been in, but I'd like a more specific answer please.

The warbbling you hear is from the pressure difference created by the movement of the car. The air rushing over the surface of the vehicle at highway speeds creates a pressure differential in much the same way an airplanes wing creates a pressure difference, creating lift. In your case, the difference of the speed of the outside air rushing across an opening with air that is drastically slower, at rest you could say, forcefully draws the calmer air into itself, pulling the air out of the car. Once you open the second window or more, the pressure lower considerably. You have probably noticed someone smoking in a car with windows up, the smoke is undisturbed. When a single widow is barely lowered, the difference in pressure is enough to pull the smoke out the open window. Thus you can see the presence of both high and low air pressure.

This is the same cause and effect experienced when a tornado or hurricane passed a house that closed. The higher pressure of the big wind sucks hard on the still air and can cause the house to pop.

    I hope this helps.

Vibration always happens when you're driving but it will create some noise if you have some loosen parts that don't have anti friction or some kind of absorbent like a rubber in between of a soft object between two hard materials. Static pressure helps noise reduction but an unstable pressure will worsen it.

It seems strange that none of my older cars ever vibrated. Only my newer (2000's) cars vibrate, and really, really bad.

You'd think that for $30,000 they could engineer a back window that is quieter when down.

There is no cure. Use this information as a negotiating point when purchasing another car.
