When is the best time to spread winter rye grass?

I live just N of Houston TX. Want to put down rye to prevent weeds from coming back next spring. When should I put down. Also fertilizer before or after and how long between applications?

Put the seed down in the fall when weather begins to cool down a bit, fertilizer will not harm grass seed so you can fertilize before after or at same time. Just make sure is only fertilizer and does not contain weed control or supressants of any type. You should be fertilizing your lawn about every 6-8 weeks more often in spring and fall as lawns grow more then during summer lawns are less active and require less fertilizer Ideally you would do two fertilizers in the spring about 4-5 weeks apart 1 in the summer and 2 in the fall. Being in Texas not getting snow or ground frost your lawn probably grows in winter as well so put one on in january or sometime around there so you will be doing 6-8 fertilizers a year depending on how often you do them. Most important make sure to water your lawn regularly in Canada we go by 1" of water per week may be more in Texas call a lawn care provider and they will tell you how much and then try to sell you lawncare.:)

depending on the size of the area you can spread by hand. If it's a large area use a scotts spreader.
