When is the best time to spread winter rye grass?

Put the seed down in the fall when weather begins to cool down a bit, fertilizer will not harm grass seed so you can fertilize before after or at same time. Just make sure is only fertilizer and does not contain weed control or supressants of any type. You should be fertilizing your lawn about every 6-8 weeks more often in spring and fall as lawns grow more then during summer lawns are less active and require less fertilizer Ideally you would do two fertilizers in the spring about 4-5 weeks apart 1 in the summer and 2 in the fall. Being in Texas not getting snow or ground frost your lawn probably grows in winter as well so put one on in january or sometime around there so you will be doing 6-8 fertilizers a year depending on how often you do them.
