Rocky Marciano vs Floyd Patterson. Who wins?

revisited question. Let's say they fight in 1956 with Patterson going after the undefeated Rock.

Bearing in mind what Ingo's right hand did to Floyd (coupled with the fact that Floyd went into mental collapse), I don't think he would really be in the fight after the first "Suzie Q" landed. Marciano probably had the hardest right cross of any HW champion, certainly harder than Johansson's. Let's not forget that the left hand scored it's share of KO's as well. Floyd was fast but not nearly as clever or as strong as Walcott. If "Jersey Joe" couldn't outbox Marciano for a full fifteen rounds, I don't see Floyd doing it. Marciano eventually caught up, regardless of how faster his opponent was because his will was truly indomitable. He could NOT be defeated mentally. In his mind, he was always one punch away from winning; he was probably the most confident champion if you think about it. As his manager Al Weill once said "Marciano goes in for a fight like I go to the fridge for a beer." It is this reason that he was undefeated and is a top five heavyweight of all time IMO.

The hardest opponent for Marciano IMO would be a guy like Mercer who had a great chin and a big size advantage as well as good skill. The way Marciano threw punches, constantly, and at any target he could hit, he was going to land eventually. And with Floyd's weak chin, I think the first big right hand that landed even semi flush, would be a fight ender. Marciano KO's Floyd in 5 rounds.

A match made in heaven for Marciano.... Marciano had the crushing punch and Patterson had the glass jaw that could easily be crushed! Patterson had the speed to run like Comacho Sr. & Jr, but had too much heart to run. He would try to slug it out with the Rock and he would be in the same boat as the first fight Billy Conn had with Joe Louis. Conn was ahead on points on all score cards until he thought he could ko Joe. He needed to listen to his corner. He could have been champ had he done so instead of being counted out. Point is, Patterson had the same mindset. He did not learn from his first fight with Liston. Did the same thing in the 2nd fight and again was a ko victim. When you fought Marciano, you better be able to move and back-peddle.

You know this is when Patterson comes to the Heavyweight division after Marciano retires. Now if Marciano did not retire and stayed as champion that would put him at 33. With Patterson being carried to the title by D'matto I believe Cus would have avoided Marciano. If that would have fought Patterson would have had his chin tested a lot harder and earlier than Liston, Ali, and Johansson did. Marciano win by KO very quick.

We have seen this question before and having seen Patterson through his long career, he could not take a heavyweight punch. Marciano would have hit him in the head sometime before the end of 15 rounds and "falling Floyd" would have hit the mat. For a long count.

Marciano would knock out Patterson. Patterson couldn't take a punch.

The Rock breaks Patterson down and knocks him stiff inside of 5 rounds.

I respected Patterson but he is overmatched against Marciano. Strength of chin and strength of punch both favor Marciano. Marciano wins by KO in round 3.

Couldn't have said it better than Mike C. Floyd's got the talent, just not the durability or strength. Nor does he have the ability to keep away from Rocky's power.

Rock by KO, but Floyd makes a good account of himself for 5 rounds with his speed and accurate hitting.

Marciano was like a pitbull, when it comes to taking blows and dishing it out. Patterson even with his talent would have gotten broken down and eventually knocked out.
