Screaming Squirrel?
Around my house we have a few squirrels who like our trees. Today I thought I heard a strange noise coming from outside, a "Chk, chk" then a hoarse scream. Looking out my window I saw one of the squirrels clinging to their favorite tree, yelling her head off. Any ideas why?
Something to know: cats got two of her babies last year. Is she mourning the loss of more pups?

If she has babies she could be calling them to follow her. Often when a squirrel is on the ground and something approaches mom and or dad will run up a tree and call the babies behind them. I once watched as a family of squirrels were eating under several pecan trees, as someone walked past on the sidewalk several feet from them, mom and dad both ran up the closest tree chipping for the babies to follow which all but one did. The one baby ran back and forth between the two trees not quite reaching either one for about a minute because as he would get close to one of them the other would call and he would run that direction. Lucky for the baby the passerby meant him no harm, if it had been a cat it would have had a squirrel dinner because of the babies hesitation to pick and follow either parent quickly.
They will also chipper (cuss in squirrel talk is what I call it) throw sticks or nuts and flick their tail if there is something like a dog on the ground that they are trying to run off. I have a dog that every time she goes outside gets cussed out in squirrel language and pecans tossed at her because she will bark at them.

There is probably something disturbing her, or she is warding off intruders. I don't know if she'd mourn the loss, but she's probably trying to prevent any from getting eaten.
