Use CFL's and turn off unnecessary lights. I also plan to use my Yahoo! Answers tote bag that just came today to limit or eliminate plastic or paper store bags. Plan trips to include all stops in one day instead of making many trips to the store, etc.

Mostly good answers so far. I'd like to add 'buy locally'. Find out how far away the things you buy are coming from. If something you buy comes from the other side of the world, (most clothes and everything does), it had to travel that far and burn that much fuel to get to you. Check out the local farmers' markets and only try to buy food items that are in season. Grow your own! That would be the most local you could get. On nice days, let your laundry dry outside. The dryer is one of the biggest energy hogs in your house. Unplug things when not in use. Many electronic appliances have a light or a clock on them that run even when the appliance is "off". You'll notice a difference in your electric bill if you do this. Eat a vegan diet. The energy that is used to plant feed, harvest feed, obtain water, feed animals, kill animals, package animals, and deliver animals costs an enormous amount. You could cut out a huge amount of energy cost by just eating the feed. It is much healthier and makes you feel less weighed down. I've been doing it and it's great! There are many other things, but here is a start, it depends on how committed you are to saving energy.

Use CFL bulbs instead of the more wasteful normal bulbs. They use less evergy & last 70% longer. Also always turn off lights and only run your air conditioner when you're home. A big one is hooking your computer up to a power strip with different plugs that can turn off and others that stay on all the time. Even when your computer (or anything else) is plugged in but off it still sucks energy. Unplug any unused phone chargers, ipod chargers, and speakers.

Turning off lights when leaving a room, not leaving the computer on 24/7...getting rid of the computers R/T for a flat screen "it uses much less electricity" recycling all glass, cans, paper, plastic etc. Upgrading the central air conditioning in your home to a high efficiency unit 13seer or higher. Buying autos and trucks that aren't gas guzzlers!

One way to save energy is to buy a tankless water heater. They only use gas or electricity when you use the hot water. As the name states there is no tank of water to keep hot all the time. They work great, take up less space than a conventional water heater, make sure your doors and windows are sealed tightly if not get some weather stripping, lower your thermostat and or get a programmable thermostat as not to have the heat or AC running the all time, http://www.samstownecenter.com/merchants/home_gard...

Everything you do has an environmental cost, from turning up the heating to flying abroad. If you buy less, consume less, generally use less and consider how the item is disposed off prior to buying you will automatically save energy, money and resources.
Limit your family size and do the above and you have just about got it covered.
