I rent a house, there is room in the backyard for a garden, but would require intensive tilling and other work. What are your suggestions for container gardening what works and grows best? Pros? Cons?

Live approx 20 miles apart. He rarely drives to my place. I drive to his place (with my daughter) and then we go out and do something. He has only on a couple occasions come to pick us up. We both work, and I have the additional responsibilites of rasing my daughter. Should I stop making the weekend drive to his place? Gas prices are high, so he says he'll give me gas $$$. I have always wondered why he doesn't like to come out to my place. What are your thoughts on this?
