02 Saab 9-3, goes clickclickclickclick but won't start?

My 02, 70k Saab 9-3, goes clickclickclickclick when I turn the key, but won't start. The electrical system (radio, headlights, dash) comes on. But nothing turns over. I assume this is a problem with the starter, but I'm no genius. Before this happened, it was turning over a little slowly for approximately the first quarter second, and then it would start up fine. Any advice?

The problem is the battery cable connection. When you turn the key, battery connects to the car electrical system. If the connection is not adequate enough then it will not provide the high power needed to turn the starter and get your car running. But with the key in ignition, battery begins to connect somewhat and while you wait the terminals get warmed up and somewhat expand+connect better. Check+tighten the battery terminal connections. Also check your battery. Some batteries like AAA brand have the problem you are experiencing. If battery is faulty, the only remedy is the replace the battery. If its not the battery or terminals, then you have a type of problem that will require a technician. Even if you know what is wrong, you wont be able to replace such part. Do yourself a big favor, find a repair shop that ONLY works on Saabs and have the proper tools and documentation. Diagnostic should be free for such problem. Just take your Saab to them and they ll be able to check it (for free) and tell you what you need and how much (1 trip and problem solved). Otherwise you 're fishing to find such problem and if you have ever done any fishing you would know that sometimes it's not easy. Good luck

I don't have an answer, but I do have the exact same car, year, milage (almost) and the same problem.

My car won't start when I drive it a short distance then try to restart it after short stop. Same clickclickclick as you. Sometimes it will start if I put the car into neutral, but not always. Usually I need to let the car sit for arround 15 minutes, then it cranks up just fine.

My battery is new, the cables are clean. I took the car to the dealer but they couldn't replicate the problem. The also inferred it would be expensive to fix (even though they don't know what's happening).

If I figure it out, I'll let you know.

It's possible the battery doesn't have enough in it, to turn over.

I had this problem with my s10 a couple months ago, the lights, windows, dash and radio all came on, but it would just click when I turned the key. I jumped it and it's been working fine since.

The Starter. If it clicks the solenoid is fine but the starter is dead. But since both the starter and solenoid are both attached to each other and need one another to function properly you've might as well just change both.

Jump start the engine, you probably need a new battery! Check your alternator as well, it may not be charging. Advanced and Auto Zone check both for free with an analyzer.

I would check battery connections and battery before replacing starter. Sounds more like a bad connection

Either the solenoid is shot or the battery is weak. Have the battery tested at a local auto parts store before you do anything else.
