How much does it cost to fly pets unaccompanied?

I am looking to fly two cats unaccompanied from Chicago to Seattle. I just want to know what is an approximate fare that people have paid so I know when I start calling airlines what a good price should be. I have looked at a bunch of sites and airline homepage and there is nothing specific on price, but I am very well informed about guidelines with kennels, feedings and such.

I haven't ever flewn a cat before and not sure if the airlines would allow it since they are much more sensitive than dogs and I think they usually have to be sedated to fly. But for dogs, it depended on the weight and size of the carrier plus the animal and some airlines even took into consideration the age. I've paid $150 and $300 and the time of the flight can sometimes make a difference also. But if you do, make sure they fly on a passenger plane and not a cargo plane. Vets will usually say passenger planes are safer and I think they get better treatment because they usually get a little attention during the layovers (and are for surley checked on at that time too). But check with you vet and get some suggestions to help the cats with the flight before you put them on. Oh and if you do fly them, line the carrier with one of those "piddle pads" for puppy training, make their last meal dinner, and fill a small bowl that can be placed into the carrier with water and freeze it over night so you can still give the cat water without spilling it all over the carrier. Good luck!

Pets are flown as live cargo, usually "counter-to-counter", where they're not left in a warehouse until they're claimed AT THE CARGO counter, not the regular airline gate. I've got two birds that were shipped to me from breeders out of state and they were shipped as live cargo this way. I paid the breeders about $120 for the service, but that included the carriers. Each airline has their own policy and pricing, so you need to figure out what airline flies to where you want to ship your cats. They'll need to be in an airline approved carrier.

I do know that they are NOT fed or watered by the airline personnel, so you need to put enough food into the carrier to last the entire trip, even if they change planes.

around $300 but I would not do that. I did that to get a dog and he acted weird for 1 year and now he doing a little better.
