ball flight?

"I always have had a very high ball flight. Im a 9 handicapp now but i

feel like i could score better if i could get a better ball flight on

my irons. I have no problem with my driver which is a 7.5 degree loft

and my average drive is 295. My irons just dont relate to my driving

distance. Like i hit my 8 iron only about 135 yards because i hit it so

high with no roll. Can i get irons custom fitted to correct this. When i

say my ball flight is high almost everyone that i play with says its

the highest ball flight they have ever seen. I have it somewhat corrected

with my driver after i went from 9.5 to 7.5. What would you suggest

for irons for me? Thank You

I Am No Kind Of Pro Golfer, Im A 12 Handicap But The Son Of A Golfsmith. The Flex On Your Shafts In Your Irons Could Be Wrong For Your Swing. A Swing Speed Would Need To Be Taken Then Matched To The Proper Shaft. Also Blade Or Tour Irons Can Be Altered To Change The Loft On The Club. Sometimes Clubs Bought That Have Been Mass Produced Dont Have The Flexibility That It Says On The Shaft. See If You Have A Golfsmith In Your Area That Can Measure The Flex In Your Current Irons And Do A Swing Speed Test On You. Good Luck With It.

An 8 iron is a lofted club so you won't get a lot of roll with it. Don't try and turn it into a 5 iron. Learn to hit the set the way they were designed and you'll have better results. It's like the guy that hits a 200 yard 9 iron, he isn't hitting it right that club is designed for maybe 150 yards at the most. That's why you carry so many clubs in your bag otherwise just carry 2 or 3 and use them for all of your shots.

You can have the loft lowered on each of your irons. It's far cheaper than buying a whole new set. However, hitting the ball that high is abnormal and can be addressed by swing changes. Changing your clubs is just a band-aid and should be your last resort.

Assuming you're right-handed, try moving the ball back further in your stance (closer to your right foot) and make sure your hands are not ahead of the ball. In other words, try starting your backswing with your hands directly above the ball at address. This may feel very wierd at first. Just keep experiementing with ball position and the position of your hands. You'll find the right placment and the ball flight you're looking for.

If ain't broke don't fix it. Your a 9 handicap. I've never seen anyone hit a 7.5 driver must be a real low flight. I would look at ball position for your irons to bring the flight down a bit. Go to your local pro and have them look at your swing. Sound like the equipment is working for you. The things you need to change are probably small and can be fixed with just changing the way you play a bit.

I totally agree with SWAT. If you are already a 9 handicapper, you will have a strong swing foundation. Don't be bothered about comments on your ball positions cos any forward or backward shift of the ball does not make alot of difference in the trajectory.

My only suspicion is the shaft flex. You might be using a shaft with low flex point and active tip. Check if its true and you should replace them with shafts that are more suitable to your swing standard.

As the above poster said, I would definitely suggest correcting your swing rather than buying a new set of clubs. If you move the ball further back in your stance you will definitely have lower trajectory because you will be less likely to "scoop" the ball. Another tip would be to move your hands more towards your front foot at address. This would just be your hands so you will definitely get more of the ground and less of the ball right on the downswing. Hope this helped!
