Is it worth the trouble?

OK, aquired an old !93 Mercedes benz 190 E. This vehicle had sat shamefully for, since 2004 gathering Moss and rust. Was given offer to buy for pracicaly nil, thought how it could be restored and took it on. Right when I took it all tyres where flat (replaced), hubs and brakes seized, ( freed them), had it taken to a place where I could work comfortably on it, there were a right few things not so serious so these were fixed first. cleaned it up and over a week it really looked quite good. Restored braking system and this and that, engine started at a touch and was very quiet, quite alot of soot having sat so long still all ok, then Reek, smoke, from exhaust, took advice and was told this will clear itself after awhile as it!s because it HAS sat so long. Anyway can anyone say for sure what they think about this. Plus will a drive shaft from drivers side of another 190 fit exactly on passenger side or will I have to replace with passenger side shaft? took on a nightmare but will go on.

First of all Andy, well done, you've got quite a project on your hands!

Reek!...run the engine up warm, remove the plugs and put in a tablespoon of Redex, replace plugs finger tight and have a coffee!

Nip the plugs up tight and run the engine at about 1500-2000 rpm, you'll get a load of soot and other gunk out of the exhaust, but dont worry, this is called a liquid de-coke.

Drive shafts, very much doubt that they're identical, so replace like with like.

If you want to make money and have great fun at the same time, get hold of an old Landy for under 1500and do that up (my 1983 110 will be going for about 3000!)

Landrover Forums are a great source of info and very friendly too

    Good Luck!

Good for you, mate. Only replace the driveshaft with the correct side one, they're almost certainly different lengths. Regarding the smoking, I'd agree that it'd be beneficial to clean out the entire fuel system from end to end, then refill with fresh petrol. What's in the tank will have gone off, it's quite surprising the old girl started at all - must be a good 'un. New plugs will help too.

Keep it up, it must be nearly there!

I found a 1957 220s, and purchased it for $2500. Did all the stuff you talked about & more. Poured $$$ into it. Loved the car, loved the drive. After all the work I did, I sold it for $3,000, all I could get at the time.

It is not a collector car - only put the $$$ in it if you want to keep the car, as it is NOT going to make you money.

Get a can of Seafoam at the parts store and put it in the gas tank. This will take care of all gas problems including water or trash in the gas. When a car sits too long the gasoline turns into varnish and coats everything...Seafoam will clean this also.

    You can thank me later....

It would be best to flush the fuel system completely as it probably has moisture and sediment from sitting. Additives don't really do much except help you spend your money. A complete flush would include removing the fuel tank and cleaning it out.

ok here's the scoop try changing the oil if you haven't have good fuel and spark plugs check the color of exhaust and yes replace with the PASSENGER drive shaft NOT the driver side one

I would say give the fuel system a good injector cleaner like this stuff

The drive shafts,I would have to research, but I doubt they are te same.Get out your measuring tape and if the length and diameter are the same and the splines on the drive ends are identical then it is possible.

If you have the time and it doesn't take food off the table, go for it. As previously mentioned, it won't make you rich, but it can be spiritually rewarding, bringing an old beast back to life.
