To anyone that has read "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"?

The Sword of Gryffindor, though goblin made, never belonged to goblins. Sounds like I'm being a bit like a wizard in their relations to the other magical races, right? Well in this case not really. Rowling did explain in an interview after the books release that not all goblin made objects actually belong to those who make them.

Here's the actual explanation from the July 30th online interview, both how Neville got the sword and on ownership of the sword.

Remember that in Chamber of Secrets, Tom Riddle's memory said that "Dumbledore was driven out of the castle by the mere memory of me" and Harry says "Dumbledore will always be at Hogwarts for those who ask for it". The sword came out of the hat. Harry was proven to be a true Gryffindor, so he got the sword.

Neville got the sword by standing up to Lord Voldemort. True Gryffindors are brave and loyal, so when Voldemort told him that he wasn't going to spill his pure blood, he asked him to join the Death Eaters, to which he replied "when hell freezes over". The sword appeared, and he killed Nagini. He was proven to be a true Gryffindor. Though Griphook had it, the sword was enchanted to go to those who were true, brave, and loyal Gryffindors.

Well dumbledore said only a true gryffindor could pull the sword out of the hat. Since the sword was not harrys he could not give it away even though griphook stole the sword it still belonged to godric gryffindor. Thus it could be pulled from the hat by magic given to a true gryffindor. In this case neville.

Do you remember that Harry had pulled the sword out of the Sorting Hat to defeat the Baselisk in an earlier book? I guess the sorting hat has summoning power over the sword, wherever it is. Since Neville was a Gryffindor, exhibiting particular courage, the sword came to him through the hat.
