What do you know about dual sport (dual purpose) motorcycles?
In the market for a dual sport bike such as the Honda XR650L. I also like the KTM LC4 640 but its not a Honda.
I like the idea that I can go anywhere with one of these. I can leave the trail and drive home. Whats your opinion on dual sports? Do they hold up? passengers? aftermarket parts available?
I got interested in them and then started looking at sport bikes but after thinking a little my best bet would be a dual purpose bike. I have no experience on a street bike but alot with dirt bikes.

I rode them for 15 years until the occasional get off in the dirt stopped me.
Honda makes great bikes that need little maintenance and likely run forever.
They have the best engineers in the world in my opinion.
KTM will eventually cost you money for something, no way will it be as trouble free as a Honda.

Theres only one way to go when it comes to dual sports. Kawasaki KLR 650. The Unites States Military uses them in combat zones... If that isn't a testament to it's superiority and durability over the others than I don't know what is. It also has a huge aftermarket whick ranges from mufflers to diesel conversions. Plus it makes a pretty good touring mount and you can pack it like a muel with gear and a passenger. You seem biased toward the honda but I have to warn you that it's near the bottom of its class having an outdated air cooled and all. If you don't like the kawasaki then i'd go for the next best which is the suzuki dr650.

The dual sport model you pick all depends of what percentage of your riding your planning on doing on road and off road. The Kawasaki KLR650 and the Suzuki DR650 are better suited bikes for on road, street riding than they are for off road dirt riding, if ur planning on riding 80% street and 20% dirt then those 2 are the perfect bike for you. The Honda XR650 is geared low, torquey engine more suited to off road, riding the Honda on the street you will be screaming the engine at top highway speeds, another bike is the Suzuki DRZ400S, this bike is made more like a street legal motocross, racing bike, it will go 90 mph on the street, but will be uncomfortable for long road trips, and its the top choice of a dual sport is most of ur riding is off road.

Tom had alot of good suggestions but to go even farther than that. If you want a 80% dirt and 20% street you can make a MX bike road legal with a legal pipe and a horn. Their are lots of options that all rely on you style.

yes they are fine at 2 up riding I've done it many times on a Honda XL250cc enduro or dual sport bike, doing both on and off road riding

they are alot easier. dont have to transport your bike on the truck, just ride to the location on road.
