Blackberry bush question?

I've given several blackberry plants away over the years. This works well:

In Autumn (fall) you will notice the long new thick shoots trying to bend down to the ground....choose one and put a pot under it, filled with a good, moist compost. This is where it will root over winter. When early summer comes you will find a new shoot has come up in the pot. When it has leaves on it, cut it free from the 'mother' shoot. It is then ready to be transplanted into its new garden. You'll find there's a good root system already in place and there's no transplanting to do.

I think what I would do is find a branch that is close to the ground. Dig a small hole below the branch, push the branch into the hole, leaving the growing end out of the hole. Place a brick on the branch and cover well with dirt and pack down a little. Next spring dig it up. It should have roots where you burried it. Cut it off the bush and plant it for your mom. You can probably do this with several branches at one time and create several bushes. Also, if one doesn't root, there is a chance others will.

All you need to do is drop a rock on a growing tip. Blackberries sprout from the tip, rooting just like strawberries.

Doing it in a pot (as suggested by others) is the simple way to make a plant for giving.

You would probably be better off either planting the berries if you have any left in a container/pot; or look around the base of the bigger bush for any smaller bramble (young light green ones) that are sprouting up. If you find any dig those up and put them into a planter to take to your mom.

I have a wild blackberry/bramble bush growing near my front lawn and I am often cutting the sprouts back as they are alway coming up in my yard.

I have a single stem growing. Now about 4' high. Should I cut ir back?

Bend a stem down and stake it so that it is touching a pot with moist soil in it. The stem will send roots into the soil. After a couple of weeks, you can cut away the stem on both sides and you will have a new plant in the pot.
