Go rent a carpet shampooer like a Rug Doctor. They do a good job - you'll be amazed at how much crud is in the water when you first dump it. Many grocery stores, home improvement stores, etc have them. In my area they go for $20-25 for 24 hours. That's plenty of time to do a houseful of carpets. Some places will rent them for 4-8 hour blocks at a cheaper rate, too. You can buy a carpet shampooer if you want, but to get one that does as well as the rental, you'll have to spend several hundred dollars. That will let you rent the rug doctor at least 10 times, maybe 20, before you break even. To me it makes sense to rent.
You can speed things up by having all the vacuuming done before you go get the machine, and having furniture moved off the carpet before also. Otherwise, you're paying rent on the machine while it's sitting there doing nothing while you vacuum.
Use the Rug Doctor shampoo that you can buy when you rent the machine. It does a good job, and you can always rent the machine next time and use the soap left over from this purchase.
Another tip - cut squares of aluminum foil to put under the feet of tables, furniture, etc when you put it back. If the rug is still a bit wet, the finish may bleed out of the wooden foot, or the steel peg on the bottom may rust. Either can stain the carpet.
