Social Security Disability. I'm beginning the process of applying for it.?
Any tips on jumping through their hoops? I've heard they automatically deny the first application. Truth or fiction? I am very close to actual retirement age, will that help get me through?

I can't say that I have tips for jumping their hoops, but I can recommend that you have all of your medical records in order, and statements from your physician, any specialist you are seeing and any hospital, prescription, therapy etc.
They are going to of course, really try to not allow your claim. They want to have 2 to 3 things that will qualify you as disabled, and they want for you to have been disabled for at least a year (in most cases) and that this disability continue for at least a year past the date of application.
Make sure that you have a mental health evaluation. This is a huge point with SS...they want to see what the mental effect of your injury or illness impact is on you. Often times, mental disabilities are the deciding factor on rewarding benefits.
I don't know what your job was before, but they will look at that, as well as your education level, age and family status to determine if you will be able to be retrained at another job. However, if you show mental distress (PTSD, Depression, Anxiety) that may help.
Regardless of what they tell you, don't give up if they deny you. File an appeal immediately, and hire an attorney that handles social security disability. Any attorney that deals with SS claims are paid on a contingency basis (they don't get paid unless you get paid) and are bound by law to only take a certain percentage of your settlement, so you will not be wiped out with attorney fees. In fact, they will pay the attorney directly, so you will not have to pay out of pocket at all.
Another piece of advice that I have for you is to keep track of all conversations, calls, letters, etc. that you get from the SS office. Get names, record call times and dates. This may prove helpful in your claim as well.
