Does God approve of polygamy?

Here we go. 1 Kings 11. That randy old hero King Solomon married 700 princess and had 300 concubines. Makes you wonder if they had an ancient version of viagra.

My question is that God only seemed to disapprove of the fact that some of them were foreign and led him to worship foreign gods. The bible does not seem to mind about his ultra-promiscuity. Why not?

Update:

Harry - good point - so many thousands of men were massacred in war it was perhaps not surprising.

Aisha good question no I dont

Update 2:

Commander you need to read the passage more carefully. It is clear God was angry with Solomon for marrying foregn women and worshiping foreign gods not for polygamy per se

In the days of the Old Testament, women did not work to support themselves so after their father died they would be destitute if they didn't marry. The male population was lower than the female because of various wars and work-related accidents so there were never enough men to go round - hence polygamy; an economic necessity as a result of cultural expectation.

By the time of the New Testament the advantages of monogamy had begun to be recognised.

Does God approve of polygamy? It's the lesser evil after starvation!

Remember that concubine in that sense means wife from a lower social status.

I am not going to comment on polygamy per se, but I _KNOW_ that God disaproves of the abuse and injustices which easily arise in polygamous societies. In polygamy, the man is to be provider for his wives and children, not a domineering task master. Marriage is supposed to be entered into of one's own volition, not a father forcing his young daughter to face that stage of life. Jealousy often shows its ugly head.

Its says in the bible, that a man shall leave his parents and take a wife, and the two will become one, not three, four, five or 300! No, i dont think God approves of polygamy

God overlooked polygamy in the Old Testament, but the New Testament makes it crystal clear that polygamy is not acceptable behavior.

Monogamy is the rule; polygamy, a very strict exception to the rule.

God disapproved then and continues to do so...read about the hell those men went through for disobeying God...look at the turmoil cheating and adultery causes now a days...Do you actually think God is not trying to tell us that its wrong!!

It seems polygamy is fine, but polyandry is right out.
