Winlogon.exe slowing down boot on win2000 computer?

My old computer,Pentium 3, 512 ram just got upgraded to Windows 2000 (I know ,but it is the only OS I had ). Upon booting up my task manager shows winlogon.exe process taking up a huge amount of resources and time. It can be up to 2 minutes before it will finally end. I am not running a network or have multiple users. I searched the net and came across someone who said if I had more than one winlogon.exe that it was probably a virus or similar. I ran AVG, Spybot and Adaware and they can not find any problem. I searched for winlogon.exe and found it in three places

C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386----181,008 bytes

C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistibution\Download\1ecef9.......etc---186,640 bytes

C:\WINNT\system32----186,640 bytes

Could any of these be a problem?

Any suggestions on how to speed up boot time. It sure sounds hard on my hard drive?

Thank you

Hi, if u upgraded to windows 2000 right now then I doubt a virus could get on that fast, the thing is if u upgraded then some of windows 98 components are still working underneath and will still take system resources. That is why I recommend u do a new installation of Windows 2000. If that isn't the case and u did do a complete install then restart in safe mode and visit this site:

    http://onecare.live.com/

Run Microsoft's free safety scanner and it will remove all viruses, spyware, trojans, malware, and registry errors and make ur pc as good as new.

For increasing boot time u should defrag ur harddisk and run a scan for errors and bad sectors.

    Good Luck!

Sounds like you have a lot of programs in your Start Up file, most of which don't even need to be there. Most software manufacturers, particularly Microsoft, put these in when you install software to make their programs start faster. It looks like their product is better than their competitor's. By editing your Start Up you can eliminate these and you'll start up much faster. X-Setup Pro, a freeware program you can download, makes this job easier. You can disable or delete these files with it. Start by just disabling (removing check mark in box) to make sure you didn't remove something necessary and can go back an enable it again. Once you've done that and everything is fine, you can go back and delete that junk.

Yes it more than likely is a virus. Try posting a HJT Log.

You can click start-----click run-----type msconfig------click startup tabs, then you can uncheck programes that dont need to run at startup. Then click ok to exist..And you also can go visit http://www.make-pc-fast.info/index.php?t=makepcf to download a speedup software.

    Good luck!
