Why does my computer restart itself?
Okay, I noticed this problem yesterday. The computer restarts itself about every hour, or just basically whenever it wants to. When it comes back on, it says "The system has recovered from a serious error." It's restarted about five times in the past two days.
I have a Dell Dimsion 2350 with Windows XP 2002 and not a whole bunch of memory left (might have solved this a while ago, not sure), if it helps.

Your computer will restart itself when there is an error with windows. This is usually a windows stop error and will result in a bsod(blue screen of death) of an auto restart. Rightclick Mycomputer, go to properties then click the advanced tab, about midway down there is a box under the system failure section that says automatically restart, uncheck the box, next time there is an error you will most likely get a bsod, and that will make it much easier to find out what the problem is. Or it could be like my computer, mine would restart for no reason, so i turned off auto restart, and i have not had a problem since...its wierd, but I follow rule 1 in electronics, If it works, Don't Fix it!
Source(s): also norton and mcafee do not have a valid license, meaning their products do not do what they say they do. I really do not like them, they are cpu hogs and are very intrusive. Go for something like AVG free edition. - 1 decade ago
You could have a worm. I found a worm on my computer that forces my computer to restart every few moments. I could barely do anything. Once, it didn't reset for a short while and I was able to run a virus scan that deleted the worm. It could be a system error, a program that you have downloaded or installed, a virus/worm of somesort. The best action for this is to buy an anti-virus program such as Norton or MCAfee. I prefer AVG free adition though cause they actually do what they say they do. And it doesn't hog the CPU.
Another problem could be that there is a problem with a part on the computer such as the motherboard. If this is true, then you have to troubleshoot by borrowing a similar computer and replacing one part at a time to see where the problem is. If the same problem occurs with a curtain hardware, then that is most likely the cause of the problem.
If your too lazy, then hire a computer technician to help you. I wouldn't do that though cause they charge for so much money. It'd make a good job though. xD

I would do a virus check . But as you said you have not alot of memory left and iam suggesting one of your programs you have downloaded has done this , now think back 2 days ago what did you install and this started to happen? Well here "start " then "control panel " and "uninstall the program in which you feel that happened for the computer to restart" . Another another little tip here sorry but dell computers arn't the best as they are cheap as many can tell , the best computer's to use are Compaq's . OT is this your personal computer ? maybe try and switch user on start and where it says shut down and restart and all that . But defently sounds like a hidden little virus in something that you have downloaded 2 days ago . But i think you and iam guessing here you need to buy and update your virus protection as most computers only come with a 12month warranty virus protection and then your on ya own , to purchase a new virus protection disc , computers have to always have protection , there kinda like humans ha ha

my friend had a very similar issue. It got so bad it was restarting after 30 seconds. Took it apart and tested everything one by one. Turned out there were some capacitors or soomthing that were burned out. He just needed a new motherboard.

First suspect heating problem and then the power supply. I f the system is not that old then i would check for heating problem because power supplies will typically last for several years

Scan for viruses first
if you look at the error report that is sent to MS it will tell you the exact line of script that's causing the error.
