Dell photo printer 720-Won't print in color!?

I have a Dell Photo Printer 720 and I can't get anything to print in color. It DID at one point print in color, but my black ink cartridge ran out. I have now replaced my black ink cartridge with a new one, and the same color cartrdige is installed. Neither cartridges are trials. The color cartridge is almost full, I have used very little ink out of it.

It only stopped printing in color after I replaced the black cartridge. I went through the steps in the maintence section of the printer section in the control panel, and I selected "old" color and "new" black" I've even done it with "new" of both, and it still wont work.

This is my DEFAULT printer on WIN XP.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what do? I did the clean the head thing through the maint. section but nothing is working.

I've tried doing the "print allignment test page" thingy too, and the last line (the one in color) still will not print. Nothing is printing in color.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer

Update:

The printer was NOT left on between cartridge changes! I took the color cartridge out and put the little plastic tab back on the little pad thingy on the bottom until I bought a new black cartridge.

I have redone the drivers and that did not help.

The color cartridge is 39.99 at office depot for the generic replacement for the dell printer. It is even more on dells website!

If it's been a long time (a week or two or more) and the printer was left on, there's a possibility the color cartridge got clogged with dried ink. If that's all it is, a new cartridge would solve it, but that's probably $15 or more, and if it's a software problem, it won't help at all.

Other than that, all I can suggest is uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers.

    ADD:

If it's not the hardware (the cartridge) it's most likely the software. Unplug the unit from the computer, uninstall the drivers (using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel) then reinstall the software. If you've misplaced the CD that came with the printer, I'm sure you can download the files from the Dell website.

If that doesn't work, then I don't have a clue. Good luck.

(My guess at $15 was based on the price of HP cartridges.)
