I would suggest that you come for a months vacation and see as much as you can then go home and move a year from now.

Everyone who comes here is looking for the "cheap, clean, and safe". It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's clean and safe, then it's more expensive. If you need good schools, add a couple hundred bucks a month on top of it.

If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage.

"LA" is such a big place, there are so many neighborhoods/cities where you can live. Of course, even within a city or neighborhood, there are safer sections and less-safe sections.

In Los Angeles, some nice sections are West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Eagle Rock, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, West Hills, Chatsworth.

To the east: South Pasadena, parts of Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendora, San Dimas, Laverne, Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga.

Along the beach: Santa Monica, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Rancho PV.

In Orange County aka "The OC": Seal Beach , Huntington Beach , Newport Beach , Corona Del Mar , Laguna Beach , Dana Point , Capistrano Beach , San Clemente , Brea, Yorba Linda, Orange, Tustin, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest

To the west: Agoura, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Simi Valley, Moorpark.

This is not an all-inclusive list, but it's a start.

With 3 of you, you should be able to afford a pretty nice place. I live in Long Beach, and can tell you parts of it are bad, but there are good spots here too. I live less than 2 blocks from the beach in a 2 bedroom with a roommate, and pay $1195 a month (split in half is $597.50, very affordable for me). I'm moving into my own place on Tuesday, since my roommate bought a house, and am going to pay $800 a month.

There are areas of Los Angeles that are very expensive, owning a home is also out of the question for most people unless you buy a condo in the ghetto. Ultimately, decide what the three of you like to do, like to be near, what kind of nightlife you like, whether or not you're going to school, then come up with a more detailed question. The more specific you get, the better. If you want help later on, feel free to email me. You can link to my email from my profile.

What the answers said is all true. Los Angeles 450 square miles, 84 suburbs in search of a city. You are disconnected from everyone and it takes lot of drive time to get around. I would think you can find a modeling agencyin a smaller city like San Diego. You must have a roommate but go to a roommate service rather than Craigslist.

Try looking in Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, La Crescenta, and Montrose...all safe areas to live in. Rents can range..but you can probably find something reasonable (especially if you have roommates) if you look hard enough. You might also want to look in the Inland Empire (further west of L.A.) in cities such as Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Claremont, Ontario.

If you want to find "reasonably priced", don't expect anything really close to Metro stations unless its in South L.A. Plan for something in the suburbs (i.e. Asuza, Rosemead, Gardena, etc....) without reasonable metro access and 100% car dependence. Those are the people who think L.A. is all about traffic. If you want to spend more (which I heavily recommend, if nothing more, but for quality of life!), find something in Hollywood, Pasadena, Downtown, North Hollywood, Long Beach, etc... where Metro rail is available, convenient, and safe.

Not unless you want to live in an really rough neigborhood where you safety would be a primary concern. Try other cities in California. (Sacramento, for example).
