I am having problems connecting to the internet.?

Earlier today my internet connection died. I tried re-booting the modem and the router, and it worked briefly, though extremely slowly.

I called my local (and worthless) tech support #, and was told that it is my router. (D-link 614+) It is hardwired, and not using wireless.

They told me to plug directly into the internet. I tried this, but obviously I don't want to do this for any length of time. Is there anything I can trouble-shoot to make sure that it is my router? I don't want to drop $100 on another one. What could cause a router to suddenly go bad? I have changed no settings in more then a year. Also my firewall came up with about 10 different connections in it. All from different IP addresses, though they all had the same MAC address. What are these?

Thanks for any help!

Update:

How did you configure it? What did you change?

I had a similar problem after a power outage.

What my tech support did was reset my connection (from their HQ), and then they asked me to cut the router and modem's power source off for about 5 minutes and then plug them back in.

I did that and it still didn't work, so as a last resort I reconfigured the connection from my own computer. And then it worked.
