Rugby Union rules?
Can someone please briefly explain the rules of Rugby union, including if their is a limit to the number of substitutions they can use in a match.
I have watched rugby matches on & off in the past but I have never really understood what I am watching, and with the world cup on at the moment I would like to understand things a little more.
Thanx for anyone that can help.

For the substitutes, there are 7 guys on the bench, usually for covering different positions since rugby can be very different. it is a must to have a sub prop and hooker since the frontrow of the scrum can be very dangerous to players who dont know what they are doing. there is usually a sub second-row(tall guys who jump in the lineout) and a sub back row, or some combination of forwards. Since a lot of positions in rugby like the prop position are specialist positions there is usually a sub scrum half for passing a sub kicker and another fast guy on the bench. that makes up the structure (basic) for subs in a match. they can all be used during the game.
if there is a blood injury, a player has to go off to get seen to, a sub is aloud come on briefly to cover the bloodied player, but when the player returns after being stitched up the sub goes back to the bench.
Also when a prop or hooker gets sent to the sin-bin (yellow card offence) the team with 14 men have to bring on a sub to cover the front row, usually another player is sacrificed to temporarily make way for the sub to come on. when the 10 mins in the sin bin is over it returns to the original 15 with the sub returning to the bench.
Other than that when a sub is brought on the player coming off cannot be used again in international matches at the world cup.

If it's a conversion the player must kick the ball as it lies if he has already started his run-up. If it's a penalty, I believe the player can either kick the ball as it lies or tap it, pick it up and play on. In either instance if the ball falls over before the run-up has started the player must ask permission from the ref to set it up again.
