Though one of the earlier ISP servers, there is a lot of

traffic on clubs that supply larger metro, school or city data.

The best idea I have, is use an aol type homepage that will open. Some that work best include network televisors, and radio

connect local live. This is what the laptop in general thrives on.

Here is some easier news and instructional sites.

There should be 3 cords on your cable modem. One is a power cord, one is a cable that looks black, very round and has a silver end that connects to the cable modem. The third one looks somewhat like a phone cord only thicker.

Plug that one into the WAN or Internet port of your wireless router. Should be a blue socket as opposed to the other 4 that are side by side.

Then follow the instructions for your wireless router on how to set it up.

    Enable WPA2 if you can.

Change the password of your wireless router, to something really LONG, use a label maker to attach the password to the bottom of the router.

Turn off the "broadcast SSID" setting on the router.

This should be easy to work through. You'll just need to get familiar with your router and laptop.

The Modem connects to the router. You should be able to connect your laptop to the router via cable and get to the internet. This is your first test. If this works then continue on. If it doesn't work then you need to find out why your modem and router are not communicating.

Once you connect your laptop to your router and get internet access, follow the instructions that came with your linksys router. Open up a web browser. Instead of typing in www.whateversite.com type in 192.168.1.1

The default password for linksys routers is admin and there is no logon id. Just a password. enter that and you'll be taken to the linksys setup screen. Change your admin password.

On the linksys setup screen tell it to be a DHCP Server. Accept the defaults.

On the wireless screen tell the router to broadcast. Ive your wireless a name. Accept the rest of the defaults.

Once this has been set then you can disconnect your laptop from the router and try connecting to it via your laptop's wireless networking. Choose the wireless connection with the name you called it. Your laptop should log on.

This is the basic setting for a wireless connection. You'll want to add security so that others cannot connect to your router.

Under the wireless settings, look at wireless security. Choose WEP as your security and generate a passphrase. This will be the code your laptop and any other wireless connection will need in order to connect to your network.

After you add the passprase make sure you write it down and write down all the keys.

After you make these changes and save you will lose your internet connection. Look at the properties of your wireless conection on your laptop and enter the WEP key i.e. passphrase. This will get you back in.

OK, here is the way to go:

    1. Go to 192.168.1.1 on Internet Explorer.

    2. Look for a Wireless tab. Change the SSID name to whatever you want.

    3. Look for Security inside that tab.

    4. Choose an encryption type (I would use WAP or WAP2) and enter a long password, using uppercase letters, lowercase letters, some digits and a special character (like AbcDef1234@).

    5. Click on any Save or OK button. The router may have to reboot.

    6. On the laptop or any PC connected wireless, click on the wireless connection and look for wireless connections. Choose the SSID you used on step 2.

    7. Enter the password that you used on step 4. Use the exact password that you used, paying attention to uppercase, lowercase, digits and such. Uppercase is not the same as lowercase. Click on Accept or OK.

    8. Voila! You should be ready to connect to the Internet.

Source(s): I did this myself at home to setup my wireless network.

your cable modem should come with a setup disk - you will need to be connected via ethernet cable to do this.

set this up with your username and password and any other information (you can get this from your provider)

then after setting that up, connect your wireless router (this should work automatically when connected to the modem but if not....) either use the setup cd (if it came with 1) or just use the 192.168.1.1 thing to configure it with the same settings (once again, you can get these from your ISP

linksys modem --> going into linksys wireless router on the WAN / internet port -- Assuming your internet connection works on your desktop computer when you are directly connected into the wireless router using a network cable.

Then from there go to the 192.168.1.1 page

    Go to wireless :

wireless mode should be mixed ,

Wireless Network Name (SSID) should be something you can remember ie a nickname or something thats not related to computers thats fairly long.

select what wireless channel you want to use, generally 1,3 , 6 and 12 are reasonable ones to select, I normally leave it on 1, unless your getting interferance then come back to this later and select a different wireless channel.

Under that there should be a radio button to enable or disable wireless SSID broadcast ( you can either have this disabled or enabled, depending on how secure you want your network, having this enabled makes it easier for your laptop etc to find later on )

Click apply and it should apply it and you can click on continue once its applied that then go and

    click on wireless security

    select WPA2 personal

and from the drop down menu select TKIP+AES

type in a password that you want to use and apply that.

now on your laptop ( not sure if you are still going to be using your laptop now or not )

either way if you are using your laptop then dis connect it from the network cable from the router and enable wireless and on your wireless connection open up to view wireless connections if you left SSID broadcasting enabled and select your wireless network and enter in your password twice ( to confirm the password ) and click on connect.

if you disabled SSID broadcasting as per above then you will need to go into network connections and right click on your wireless network connection and go to properties and on one of the tabs of the wireless connection you can configure it to connect to your wireless network using your SSID that only you know ( as you disabled your router to not broadcast your SSID - I will explain this briefly later )

Once you have entered your SSID there along with the password you set in wireless security.

It should let you connect to your wireless.

an SSID is a public name for a wireless network so when you broadcast your SSID ( or should I say when you leave your setup in your router enabled for broadcasting of your SSID ) you are basically telling your router that you want to advertise your routers public name and this lets everyone know that there is a wireless connection ( including yourself ) which makes it some what more vulnerable as other people know that its available.
