How do I fix wrong extensions on new text documents?

If I try to create a new text document by right clicking in windows explorer, a new file is created with a ".V" extension instead of a ".TXT" extension. It still opens with notepad. It used to have a ".VHD" extension until I uninstalled Altera Max / Quartus software - in an attempt to correct the same problem.

Update:

Renaming the extension after the fact is a workaround I have been using... I'm tired of using a workaround, and want a registry fix. I want the default, initial extension to be .txt, not .v or .vhd.

Try opening the file and then 'Save As' and select File Type as .txt
