Recent spam explanation?

I'm getting mail containing a link which seems to be a youtube url. The link is really to an ip address disguised through a hyperlink. I don't want to click it, but I am interested why someone wants me to visit the contained ip address.

What do they have to gain and what do I have to loose??

Update:

I would like to know how it works though, I click the link and my ip shows up in the log files, What can they do with that?

Could be several reasons, but 2 are the most likely

    1. It is spam e-mail, looking for validation of the e-mail address used to contact you. If you click on the link it will in effect confirm that the e-mail address used is correct and that you look at the e-mails. You will then be added to the spammers mailing address, and subsequently have that e-mail adders distributed to other spammers, who will in turn target your mail box.

    2. It is a link to install virus or malware. Latter is the more popular as it has a profit bonus, in that the link can install key loggers, page hijackers, etc. Remember that a company or individual who will resort to using such underhand tactics will not exactly be adverse to doing other dubious things.

I would steer well clear, and ensure you do not click on the link at any costs. Trash the e-mail , after you have blocked the sender and noted it as spam in Yahoo.

As a general rule never use your default e-mail address for buying or registering for sites and products on the web . use multiple Yahoo IDs and, if as seems to be the case here, you e-mail does get into the hands of spammers, just forget about it and set up an new address.

Sometimes Hackers will send you a link in an Email, just to get your Password. Ip.
