A healthy way to increase a dogs weight?

My pug is about a year old. The normal weight for pugs is 14-18 pounds. My pug is about 11 pounds. I've tried switching foods, but that doesn't seem to be working. He looks so skinny, especially for a pug, as most pugs have the exact opposite problem, and are over weight. Are there any sort of medications, or is there prescription food i can buy to help increase his weight?

Update:

It may help you to know he is currently eating Purina puppy chow.

Update 2:

He was checked for parasites and had his shots updated about 3 months ago. He's not loosing weight, he's just not gaining any.

I think you should consider changing your puppies diet to a meat/high protien diet, based on the information below.

Dry dog food is generally grain based baked product sprayed with flavor and nutrients. Canned food doesn't supply teeth cleaning or roughage.

    Quote from the above site:

I was always instructed, and learned in the few nutrition courses in veterinary school (nutrition is much better covered in veterinary school these days) that an imbalance of calcium and phosphorus in a dog's diet would lead to health disasters. This holds true today, too. I was instructed that "since meat is high in phosphorus and lower in calcium, too much meat is not good for dogs over long periods of time". (Many people still confuse the disastrous all meat diets with meat-based diets; one is not good the other is ideal.) Grain-based diets for dogs, and even more so for cats, do not make nutritional sense and that was exactly why I was seeing those patients with the dry and flaky, sometimes greasy skin and coarse hair coats. They were eating "Complete and Balanced" grain-based diets with nothing else added. Why add anything when it is "Complete and Balanced" already?

My enlightenment came one day, decades ago, when I saw another litter owned by a local Bloodhound breeder. This fellow seemed to me to be quiet and unassuming, didn't act like a "know-it-all", didn't ever have to bring any of his dogs in for anything other than vaccinations. When I'd ask him what he was feeding his dogs we would get into our annual nutritional discussion and I'd keep warning him about the home-made recipe and all that meat he had been feeding his dogs for years. Funny thing was, his dogs were among the very best I had ever seen. All his litters, and adult dogs, were robust, had perfect skin and coats even at six weeks of age, and never had to come in for skin problems, skeletal dysfunction, gastrointestinal problems or oral health issues. This breeder was sending his pups all over the country and there I was trying to tell him to be careful about "feeding too much meat" and I'd talk about such things as "a 'Complete and Balanced' commercial dog food would be best, make sure you don't get skeletal problems". I wondered why I felt rather foolish instructing him because I honestly thought his dogs were in optimum health. The answer came to me, finally, on its own. It seeped into my consciousness after years of seeing a pattern. The key to the healthy dogs' diets was that they were consuming a diet based upon meat and the poor doers were eating diets based upon grain such as corn!

You can check the ingredients on the back of the bag to see exactly how healthy it is for your dog. I believe Purina makes Beneful? I could be wrong, it's just off the top of my head. Corn meal, chicken or beef by-products is not something that should: A- be a key ingredient in the food (listed within the first few ingredients on the bag). And B- by-products is exactly what you might think it is... by-products can include, unfortunately, chicken leg, beak or worse. It's a processed mash of what's left over that was considered undesirable. For the most part. Granted all foods are approved by FDA and all of that, but there are better foods you can feed your dog. I have 2 cats and feed them Nutro Natural Choice, it's a high end food and more costly than a Purina brand. But a better quality food is better for your animal, period. Nutro makes a cheaper food called Nutro Max. I spoke with a representative from Nutro and I was told that it's the same quality as the Natural Choice line, just a little more affordable. They make cat and dog foods, treats, and wet foods. Depending on the age of your dog, if he is over a year old I would feed him adult food if he's a little more mature, 6 or 7 or so, I would feed him a food that is for older dogs. You should notice a difference in your dogs coat as well as a difference is the elimination of "number 2". It may be less stinky and less often. This is because the dog will be getting more out of the food and that is better for him. I would also recommend Eukanuba/Iams and Bil-Jac. There are other high quality foods out there, you can ask your local petstore for a high quality, decently priced food as well.

After a vet check for a few things I would switch to a higher quality dog food that will provide more calories per ounce than Puppy Chow. He will not have to eat more food but will get more nutrition from what he does eat.

Also you can suppliment with something like Nutrical It is a paste that you can get from most per supply places that is very high in calories and not hard on the stomach.

Increase his calories and he should add some weight.

How old is he? Many dogs don't "fill out" until they are 1.5-2 years old. It's actually better for him to be a little smaller, especially since pugs have a hard time breathing anyways, being fat doesn't help them. Double check with your vet, but it's not a good idea to put extra weight on him when his bones are still growing. Also, see about getting him on a high-protein, high-quality puppy chow. Look for something that has whole meat as its first ingredient.

Well, first of all, I would suggest that you have him seen by a vet just to make sure there is nothing wrong with him. There are many, many reasons why a dog would be under weight. Most of the time when you first bring a dog or puppy home they won't eat for a few days because they are getting use to a new place, but that really shouldn't cause them to loose too much weight. Your dog could have worms or something else that would cause him to loose weight or at least prevent him from putting on any extra weight or he could just be small for the breed. Like I said, I would suggest that you take him to the vet just to make sure nothing is wrong with him.

Now, you also need to put him on a good quality food. You need to not feed your dog foods that contain by-products, animal digest (animal feces), corn (dogs can't digest corn), artificial colors and flavors, fillers, etc. Any food you get from a grocery store is going to be a poor quality food pretty much. Grocery stores are for people and pet stores are for pets.

Some good quality foods would be..

    Natural Balance

    Canidae

    Solid Gold

    Innova

    Eagle Pack

Chicken Soup for the pet lovers soul

    Timberwolf Organics

    Back to Basics

These are all poor quality foods...

    Pedigree

    Ol'Roy

    Beneful

    Science Diet

All Purina and Pro Plan foods

    Diamond

    Iams

    Nutro

    Eukanuba

Once you get your pup on a good quality food you might want to feed him a little more. Every dog is different and is going to need a different amount of food. Don't just go by what the bag says. We feed all three of our dogs natural Balance. We started them off with the amount of food that the bag says to feed them and then we fed them a little less or more depending on what each dog needed.

    Good luck! : )

**I just read what you said about him just not gaining weight.. I would suggest that you get him on a good quality food and start feeding him a little extra (not too much). Feed him twice a day and give him 30 minutes or so to eat. If he hasn't eaten in that 30 or so minutes (you can wait up to a hour, but I wouldn't wait longer than that) take his food up and just feed him at the next feeding. I don't know if he's just not eating enough or what, but if he knows that he only has that certain amount of time to eat or he will just have to wait, he will eventually learn to eat when it's time. You could also sprinkle a bit of garlic powder in his food with a little bit of warm water and stir it around. The garlic powder is nice and smelly and will make him really want to eat his food. He will have garlic breath for a while after he eats, but you can get doggy breath mints. lol! You could also mix a little bit of wet food in with his dry food (same food of course) and that might make him want to eat more. Make sure you don't over feed him and make sure he is getting the proper amount of exercise. He is only 3-7 pounds under weight and he is still young. It might just be normal for him to be a little smaller and I'm sure he will fill out over the next year or two. If he's healthy and eating, he's most likely just going to be a small pug. I hope this helps some! Again, good luck!**

Get him vet checked for parasites, some of them are hard to detect. Then give him a quality food like New Balance; or mix some suet and rice into his food.
