How do you think this hospital complaint will end?

Okay, I took my husband to the hospital because he was complaining of severe pain in his abdomen around where his appendix is. After we were seen the first day they told us it was an infection gave us two perscriptions for it and sent us home. They called us back the next day and told us to come back in because they thought it was an appenicitis. After that whole night in the hospital they gave us the same diagnosis and prescriptions as the first night. I paid over $3000 for both nights and now they are billing me for another $3000. Plus, I am still receiving doctors bills for both nights as well. I have already filed a complaint stating that we were rushed through, given unneccesary tests and treatment, and being double billed for the second night when we should not have had to go back. THey say it can take up to 15 days to here back but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this what you think. Obviously can't afford legal advise so please don't say that.

I would go to the hospital and request copies of his medical records from this visit. If you know anyone in the medical field they should be able to tell you if the appropriate tests were performed in the ER. They should have done lab work (at least a CBC and CMP) and a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis. With the results of those tests the ER doc should have been able to diagnose appendicitis.

Make sure that you take this up with someone in administration and if legal help is where this leads to...remember, most lawyers offer a free consultation.

request copies of the charts done both nights

contact the hospital patient advocate and have them sit in on a meeting with the hospital administrator and chief of ER and doctors involved in the care and billings

if all else fails contact the state joint hospital commission to file a complaint and the state medical board ( for the doc's bills) or even the state attorney general's office

remember to keep records of all communication, meetings and patient file

also dates, times and who was present at the meetings

most likely if you keep on them(and you will have to) they may be more willing to drop the fees rather than face a complaint

remember to be calm and polite but firm

they will try to wear you down by prolonging the resolution in hopes you will give up

    good luck
