What variety of grass is this?

We have some property in the NC Mountains on a mountain ridegtop. I want to plant some of the grass like that growing on the balds in the GSMNP and around Roan Mountain and Mt. Rogers. Anyone have an idea what kind of grass this is, and where to get it? Is it called flattened oatgrass?

It is Danthonia Compressa - flattened oat grass: Also called Mountain oat grass by some. Both of these grasses have narrow leaves and are easily recognized, as the short, few-flowered pantiles bear but few branches and are unlike those of other grasses of early summer.

In Flattened Oat-grass, which is especially abundant in mountain meadows and ascends the highest peaks of the Appalachians, the stems are flattened and the flowering scales terminate in longer and more slender points than do those of Wild Oat-grass.

I`ll see if I can find you a place to purchase the seed.

PS...Sorry, I found some places selling oat grass, but not the variety you are looking for. I suggest you contact your local county agricultural extension agent. You also might contact the Smoky Ntn. National Park service. I know that grass is indigenous to that area.

The only grass I know is the grass I send flying when I'm cruising through peoples yards.
