Anyone else experience shoulder dystocia while giving birth?
When my son was born, there was shoulder dystocia. It was a very scary situation, and not exactly the "TLC Baby Story" birth I had been expecting! Thankfully, everything ended up being fine, no injuries to my son, and hes now an extremely healthy 16 month old.
I should also mention that at birth, he was 10lbs, 7oz!
Anyway, my question is, what are chances of me having another large baby? If the first is large, do the others usually follow suit?
Also, is there a chance of the same thing happening with a second baby?
The time for another baby is rapidly approaching, and Ive just been thinkning about these things...

Babies generally get bigger. The good news is you had a big BOY. It may be a smaller girl next time, as girls are gerarally smaller. My baby was stuck at 9lbs4 oz. She is fine though. I worry about number 4 for that reason. My second and third children were born at home. If I have another, it will be in the hospital.

Definately something you need to discuss with your OB when you get to baby number 2. Did your doc discuss why the baby was so big the first time around??
They may do more scans at the end of the next pregnancy to try to guess the weight and induce you or have you consider a c-section if it looks like the next one is getting too big. Also may do more monitoring on you to see if it might have been an issue with blood sugars.
It's hard to say without knowing your medical history but if you have a good doctor then you and the next baby should be fine.

Read about preventing shoulder dystocia by using alternate positions. I had to leave my wonderful jacuzzi because I was in a bad position for the midwife to manuever the baby's shoulders out. She had me lay down (which I wouldn't do again) and from that position she was able to push down an baby's shoulders while I pushed her the hell out!
Source(s): I don't have a resource, but there is a book called Birthing From Within that is a wonderful resource, especially if you want that "perfect birth" experience. - EvinLv 51 decade ago
Did you have Gestational Diabetes? Often moms with GD have large babies and are at greater risk for shoulder dystocia. If it was GD related, and you're able to control your blood sugar levels with a strict diet, then you might be able to avoid it. If it wasn't GD related, then I don't really know...

Yes, my cousin did just a few weeks ago.. and her baby was almost 10 pounds.
If it happend once, it can happen again. Just be sure to get "delivered" before the baby is soooo big!!!
Source(s): I was only 8 months in utero, and I'm over 50 yrs old now.... premies are fine... and they are smaller! - 1 decade ago
Usually the second child is larger then the first, so it is possable for the baby to be big again, more in likely they will watch you a little more closely and induce a little early. to keep it from happening again
