While asleep, we don't have to move as much as in daytime and so we don't have to use as much energy as in daytime.We have to use our energy only in building proteins,hormones,enzymes, producing new cells and so on. So we human beings heighten the growth mainly while asleep.

During the day gravity acts upon the body and forces the bones downwards, decreasing the spaces between the bones (such as the vertebrae, knees and pelvis). When you are lying down, gravity does not have the same effect and the bones are able to move apart slightly more. Thus making you slightly taller in the morning than you are whan you go to bed.

While you are awake during the day sitting and standing your spine is being compressed which makes you sometimes about an inch shorter by the end of the day as all you columns and discs have compressed. When you sleep your spine in relaxed and decompresses making you taller again by morning.

It has something to do with the discs in your back expanding while you are asleep - so you are taller in the morning

Child developement is mainly regulated by Growth hormone, and its secretion is stimulated by sleep.
