since the time your contract expires and the age of your ipod are at a great time, i say go for it! or, if you wish, you can get a normal phone from at&t and get the ipod touch. it has 8 and 16 gb versions, fot twice the memory of the iphone.

I've had an iphone for a while now and as you'll probably hear from browsing the internet there are many pros and cons for the iphone. Firstly the bad side-You can't film video on an ipod, you can't add your own ringtones(unless you hack it), There are no games (unless you hack it), You can't add other gimmicky programs you may like (unless you hack it), the headphone socket will only accomodate the iphone headphones you get with it. If you want to use a better set you'll need to plug in an adapter so they'll fit, You can't send multi media messages (yet) The iuphone in Britain will be locked to O2 but I'm sure you'll soon discover there's a way around that problem. (I'm using an american iphone on Orange here in sunny Birmingham)....lots more bad things but I think you get the picture. Now for the good side-

The iphone is wicked! the fact it runs OSX means it looks and performs smoothly and slickly and doesn't misbehave as you'd imagine it would with all of the graphics going on. Strangers stop you in the street to say "hey, is that an iphone?" (could be a bad thing if they mug you or you aren't very confident at meeting new people), the screen resolution is unbelievable and it's not too painful watching a whole film on the screen of the iphone whereas I couldn't make it to halfway through Casino Royale on my ipod video! With wifi, web browsing isn't too painful either. Over the mobile network I understand it's a bit slow but as wifi hot spoots begin to appear around the uk you'll be able to use the google maps, weather and stock market programs to your heart's content! The ipod function is out of this world. Until the ipod touch appeared last week-there was nothing like it and the fact that the ipos touch has arrived can only lead to one conclusion...

Buy an ipod touch and a decent mobile that does everything you want.

For less than the price of an 8GB iphone you can get a 16GB ipod touch that will do everything you could dream of for your music and video collection and you won't be frustrated by the lack of 3G capabilities that the iphone has. If I'd seen the ipod touch coming I would have held out for one of those and kept using my sony mobile that does everything and takes better pictures than the iphone.

I think you know the answer better than anyone here!

What do you use your phone for?

What do you want to use your phone for?

After those questions, you should be able to decide if the iphone is right for you.

The iphone has very few advantages. The only ones being the user interface (which doesnt cater for everyone) and the fact its seen as a 'cool' phone by some.

If its mainly for songs though, you could save yourself a lot of money by doing a bit of research and finding a phone that gives a good sound output.

And as for storage, if you get any phone that takes microSD HC (High Capicity), there are 6GB cards out already, with 8GB on the way. This is in addition to any memory already on the phone, and has the added bonus of being able to swap various cards. You could have one for videos, one for music, etc etc.

Also bear in mind that while the iphone has a standard 3.5 headphone jack, Im told its recessed so only the supplied headphones will fit.

A huge drawback is that you cannot remove the battery. If the battery loses charge, or develops another fault, the phone has to be sent away. Of course this also means you cannot carry a spare battery. And being apple, it will only work with the apple iphone charger.

If your still not sure what to do, Id suggest posting another question with a list of things you want in a phone. Perhaps a list of must haves, and a list of would like to haves, if that makes sense.

My personal opinion is that its a huge amount of money (especially as its on a long contract) for such a phone lacking in features. If you really like the UI, and are happy with all the missing things - mms, 3G, etc - then go for it.

I wouldn't get one. The iPhone has a cool interface but, in the UK at least, you're likely to pay a lot (compared with just about any other phone) and be locked into a long contract. If you like the iPhone sleek look and feel - get the iPod Touch - same interface without the phone.

With the iPod Touch you also get WiFi. Feature wise the iPhone doesn't have a great spec compared with comparable phones from the likes of Sony Ericcson and Nokia - and you can get them for free on contract.

If you just want an iPod with video get the excellent new iPod Nano.

If I were you I would get either the ipod nano or the ipod touch. Both play videos and the ipod touch is the iphone with out the phone bit.

Then get yourself a decent phone free on contract.

Think about it, how any iphones are going to be stolen when you hold it up for all to see.

Plus its too big to be a general purpose phone, its not a phone you could use on an evening out clubbing is it? I wouldnt pay £280 for a phone that I have to carry everywhere.

Get the ipod touch or nano or even the classic and get a free contract phone like one of those new samsungs.

I'm thinking of getting one too, on O2 (UK)

I already have a little 1GB mp3 player which serves me fine for music and carrying files. I don't have any need to watch video's while I'm walking around or driving.

I really want the iPhone because it will double as a personal organiser. Other phones of this genre don't synch very well with computers but as much as I hate Apple products (made for women I think) they are well engineered.

If you buy an iPod video you will have to pay for it in full but if you go with the iPhone, it will be subsidised by AT&T, uh, won't it?

Plus you get more kudos points with an iPhone than with an iPhone video.

Take good care of it though, remember the information you save on it may be more valuable than the product.

No, quite frankly. All the iphone is, is an ipod with a phone tacked on.

Because the U.S. is behind with technology we in the UK have 3G, the states only have edge, which to be honest is a lot more stable than 3G, but 3G is faster.

Also the U.S. use a different tariff structure, where they dont have contracts they pay for the phone upfront then just pay for texts and calls as and when.

Here in the UK it will cost £269 for the Iphone on an 18 month contract costing between £35-£55pm, as usual it all hype and a big ripoff. I wont be buying one. Theres a lot better phones around.

I have been waiting for the iPhone to come out here for ages, but since looking at the specs and reading a little more about it...I have decided to wait for the next generation of iPhone as I know what Apple are like and they have already told me (on the quiet) that in a few months time, they are launching the next level so I am not buying now.

I will however update my handset, probably with the new sony ericsson for now, and then in 12 months time get the iPhone. I also don't want to change onto O2, as I am very happy with my current network provider.

Good luck though, it whatever you do.

I think you should just get a new ipod video and the new phone personally i have the chocolate which also holds music. Also like others said it gets alll smudgy when you touch it alot. But if you watch alot of youtube videos then go for iphone because it has internet support. Also get the Iphone if you want just one main thing to carry around and not another

Source(s): just get a cover and warrenty on iphone if you get it r0fl my friend got his stolen =P

If the cost of IPhone is not burning hole in your pocket, I will rather suggest that you should wait and watch the developments surrounding IPhone first. 8GB is certainly not adequate for serious video use and I think Apple are aware of it. Possible future upgrade may end up making it even much more expensive than it worth. But If money comes easy to you though, do what ever you like. To me for now, Ipod is a stable choice.

I Personally Would Never Buy Anything That's Combined..

If One Thing Breaks So Does The Other.

    - So If You Break It Not Only Do You Not Have A Mp3 Player You Have No Phone.

I Say Get A Separate Phone!!
