What does it mean to “suppress” feelings?

My friend is helpful and caring but she is always very eager to hear me talk about any problems. I think she sees herself as a rescuer or something. I explain that there are times when I would rather have a laugh and talk about ordinary things with her but she says this is suppressing my feelings. I don’t agree because I am in touch with how I feel on the inside but I need to choose when and with whom I might share how I feel and I also value my privacy too. Sometimes I feel worse after sharing and I don’t want to open myself to this just to please her. Has anyone any opinions on this?

to suppress your feelings means to block them out, put them behind you, or not really think about them.

Your friend may be wanting you to share your feelings all the time so that she doesn't have to share hers. She maybe the one to suppress her feelings and rather than give you the chance to ask her about her feelings if she asks you about yours than you won't ask her about hers. You should ask her why she never talks about her feelings?? Is she the one suppressing her feelings?? Ask her these questions and see what she says. Turning the tables might get her to think about what she seems to be hiding from.
