If I adopt this 3 year old Golden Retriever how can I potty train her?

If i end up getting the golden retriever i had mentioned in another post, how would i go about potty training her?, she is 3 years old so it may take longer, and since she was a stray they know nothing of her background at the shelter, so who knows if her previous owners( if any) had her already potty trained or not, and in the kennels where she's at, the floors the dogs sleep on are their bathrooms, so who knows what She thinks a bathroom is and isn't..

Any tips on potty training a 3 year old dog?

i've never tried to potty train a 3 year old before so i'm not sure what to expect...will it be just like a puppy? including all the messes along with it?

Thanks

Train her exactly the same way you would a puppy.. Scheduled meals, so you know when she needs to poop. Crate her when you can't watch her. Take her out when you let her out of the crate, praise her.

Teach her what pee pee is.. WHen she does go outside, tell her Good Girl PEE PEE outside.. SO she'll get the idea that she peed, outside.. You have to make the association so they know what they are doing.

Praise her when she does good.. Crate her when you can't watch her.. Put her water dish outside the door, they can ask to get a drink of water easier than they can ask to pee outside.

I have realy good news for you, it is soooooo much easier to potty train an adult dog then it is to potty train a puppy. Here is the deal. Most adult dogs who have been strays or outside dogs all their life, they already know, hey I am soppose to pee and poo on that soft stuff that smells really nice after it is cut (notice I didn't say anything about it being green, dogs don't know that). I have been rescuing dogs for 4 years and it has always been my experience that the older ones already know. However, there are some exceptions, so let me give you some advice on that.

    Show your dog

When you first get your dog home, leave her on a leash and walker her around the house, if she stops to pee or poo, make a simple leash correction, you want to pop the leash, not jerk. The popping is what gets the attention. The take her outside at once and take her to a spot you want her to go. Then praise her for going where you asked her too.

    Leash your dog

For the first couple days that the dog is with you, hook your leash to your hip. There are several ways to do this, easiest way, pass the leash through two of your belt loops and then pass the clip through the handle and then attach to dog, trust me, make sure it is two loops not one.

    Crate your dog

If you can not watch the dog, or you have to leave the house and can't take her with you, put her in a crate. Depending on her size will determine the size of the crate you need, but I think a Large one will be fine.

    Control feeding and water

Set controlled times for feeding. Feed twice a day, 3 cups a day, and she only gets 30 minutes to eat. About 45 minutes after she eats, she will need to go out.

As for water, don't give her any water an hour before you have to leave her, and none in her crate. Make sure to take her out before you leave.

Other than these ideas things should be pretty simple, and you may have a few accidents, just remember, remain calm if their are problems. Good luck

Most adult dogs have some potty training. They weren't born in the wild, someone loved them and cared for them, briefly, before dumping them.

Paper training is a mistake for any dog (especially puppies) because it essentially teaches the dog that it's okay to go to the bathroom in the house. Instead crate train her, or keep her confined to one room when you're not home. And tether her to you when you're home. That way if she starts to go potty you can take her outside.

Adult dogs are smart, they pick up on the house rules a whole lot quicker than puppies.

And thank you for adopting an adult!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/xtop4

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Sheesh that's gonna be tough. I would try a crate small enough that she won't hav room to move about. I don't think it will be quite as bad as a young pup, but you're going to have bigger messes.

  • 1 decade ago

you could buy potty pads and every time he goes in the house tell him no pop him on the butt and place him on there. but most of the time large dogs like that will not go in the house. they don't want to be close to it. just let it out regularly and you shouldn't have to worry bout it.
