The TC is not permanent, you must continue to be an active answerer in order to retain a Top Contributor badge. Similarly, even if you are not a Top Contributor today, you can earn the badge by contributing high quality answers in any category.

You earn a top contributor badge by being an active participant who contributes quality answers in a particular category. A Top Contributor badge does not depend on points or level. The handing out/taking away of TC badges is determined once every week.

Latest rumor says 45 answers in 30 days and 10% BA, though nobody knows the exact formula

No, I haven't had this happened

mine is still here

although some people lost their badges on

some people they got it back in a few days.

this means if the person doesn't remain active in

the community, they can lose this honor,

but you can get it back by answering questions

in one category.

This process would take about a month

with about 45 - 50 questions

It happened to me. I took a day off from answering questions and the people who got my answers put it to voting instead of taking care of best answer...so the votes were coming in sporadically instead of continuously. You have to be very dedicated to keep the "Top Contributor" badge. I'm not letting it affect my answers, but it sure was nice to see it there.

They recalculate it every week.

It may be that you've answered less recently, or that you've been shifting focus from one category to another.

You can be TC in up to 3 categories.

I had none, then 1, then 2, then 3, then 2, then 3, then 2, now none.
