How do conservatives feel about the ACLU now coming out in defense of Larry Craig?

The American Civil Liberties Union today submitted a friend-of-the-court brief to a Minnesota District Court urging it to allow Senator Larry Craig to withdraw his guilty plea because the secret sting operation used to arrest him was likely unconstitutional.

Update:

"Senator Craig has not always been a great friend of civil liberties, but you shouldn’t have to endorse the civil liberties of others to keep your own," said Romero. "Government should make public restrooms safe for all, but it should do so in a manner that is really designed to stop inappropriate behavior, rather than destroying the lives of people who might have no intention of doing anything illegal."

I'm not surprised. they will defend any case that violates people's rights, no matter who the person is or how deserving they may be of said defense and support

I really don't understand all this venom toward the American Civil Liberties Union. The sole purpose for it's existence is to defend against encroachment onto our constitutional rights. Sometimes that sets them against conservative who want to deny drug dealers due process. And sometimes it sets them against liberals who want to take away our right to own firearms. The way I see it, both of these fights are important. Once the government has the ability to deny any one of us our right to something, it's only a matter of time before it can deny that right to all of us. The way I see it, the ACLU is the last line of defense in preventing our government from descending into a tyranny (although from where I sit, it's pretty close as it is -- and no, that's not a comment on Pres Bush, just our society in general).

Wow, this is too much, and I'm conservative. Now the ACLU is sticking up for a pervert?

"In its brief, the ACLU argues that the government can arrest people for soliciting public sex only if it can show beyond doubt that the sex was to occur in public. Solicitation for private sex, regardless if it occurs in a bar or a restroom, is protected speech under the First Amendment. When free speech rights come into play, police enforcement actions must be "carefully crafted" so that they don’t unnecessarily ensnare people who are engaging in constitutionally protected speech. "

Actually, that's pretty legit. I buy that. If I'm trying to hook up with some chick it's no problem if we do our deeds in private, but we can initiate in public...

    i'm not fooled.

the ACLU sometimes does defend the conservative side, but for TACTFUL reasons.

they know very well that if they only defended the left side, people would immediately spot them as the partisian group they really are.

but taking the right side once in awhile will throw off people's suspicions.

like most left wing groups, they disguise their true intentions by hiding behind a good cause. the ACLU has openly admitted that communism is their goal.

About the same as liberals do. When are all you people going to realize that the liberal/conservative thing is a

hoax. These politicians are the best of friends off camera.

All of this horse-sh*t is designed to keep the public off balance so these crooks can get their agenda passed

while diverting your attention away from the real issues.

Start demanding accountability from your representatives

    regardless of their party affiliation!

I'm a moderate democrat and I think Larry Craig is a hypocrite, but I wasn't there to see the whole situation, so maybe I'm missing something. If Craig was wronged (although personally I don't see HOW) and the ACLU feel they have a case, so be it.

That's the job of the ACLU. However, why didn't they come to the defense of of the Jena kids and the rights of Katrina victims who were ignored and still are being ignored today?

I wonder if Craig was a poor black man if they would still take the same stance.

It seems to me as if the NAACP is for the blacks and the ACLU is for the whites.

  • I want the truth. If the guy is guilty, then let him hang, but if he's not then justice should be served.

Not every Conservative hates the ACLU. Americans get turned off by the group when they stand up for child molesters and rapists. That's just human nature.

I would guess there is alot of smoke and flames billowing from their cranial cavern, the mass conflict and inability to process such irony is probably causing wide spread brain meltdown. Failure to perceive and accept the truth of the issues leaves alot of conservatives in a paralyzed and confused state and hence unable to comprehend reality.

P.S. I think the ACLU- Craig situation is absolutely great, It is a classic example of what is GREAT about America !!! ROCK ON !!!

    Good for them.

However, defending gay behavior is not necessarily defense of Conservative values now is it.

I see this as typical ACLU defense of leftist principles as championing homosexuality, not defending scumbag Republican Senators.

I don't follow or care about individual scandals. There's always someone in either party doing something they shouldn't.

Does not affect my vote, since I vote straight party-line (Republican) to keep the Dem's from eroding the Bill of Rights.
