my son aged 11 is taking his black belt in tae kwon-do soon.?

He has made up a pattern of at least 35 moves but he needs a Korean name and meaning to call his new pattern. This is part of his test,he would appreciate your help as its the last research he has to do....

Update:

Please note this new pattern is in addition to the patterns he has already learnt over the last 4 years. Please look up the word POOM.before you start judgeing these young students.

That's an interesting requirement for a Black Belt test. I've never seen that one before - at least not in that context. I've heard of 6th and 7th Dans being required to write a form, but not a Poom Dan Candidate.

He could call it Mu Do Hyung - Mu Do means Martial Art, and Hyung means Form. Simplistic, but it works.

If you go to a reputable school, you are looking at roughly 4 1\2 to 5 years. McDojos can speed you along in about 3 years. Check out the history of the instructors and the school. See what else is taught in the school. We also teach Hapkido, Judo and Ju Jitsu. This way all of our students have a well rounded self defense experience also. Ask to watch some classes before joining. Ask to take some free classes to. A good school will be more than happy to do this and more for any prospective students. Talk to the instructor also. A few attributes that you will need for your journey to black belt are: patience, respect, humility, perseverance, the want to improve yourself and basically a good attitude. Remember this. A good school is invaluable, a bad school will taint your outlook on Tae Kwon Do. Last bit of advice, watch out for McDojos. Anything worth doing and doing right, will take time to learn. Generally more then 3 years. Good luck. E-mail me if you have any more questions.

Well done to your son. Sorry I can't help with a name for your kata name as my discipline is Shotokan. I am only posting because of the snipers who are having a dig at your son's achievement. Everything is relative and your son is being awarded his rank with respect to his efforts with his peers. This does not mean you are sending him to a Blackbelt factory. My oldest son is 15 now and gained his black belt at 10, and his second dan at 15. On his 15th birthday he finished first in kumite and 3rd in kata in the U18 section of our national competition. As second dans go he would hold his own against the majority of equivalent adult grades and has been complemented on his teaching methods by many adults who have went to him for advice on their technique. So well done again and i hope that this is another junior blackbelt who will go on to make an impact in his chosen art. I am a dan grade also and I would be the first to object if I didn't think the kids deserved the recognition and reward for their efforts.

Black belt at 11? You may want to reevaluate his training facility. Most people should not be a black belt before the age of 18. Their body hasn't matured enough to have masted the techniques. Not has their mind matured enough to grasp the complex theories of martial arts required to teach.I don't mean to be judgmental but I believe you should visit schools in your area to see what their training is like compared to your sons.

Please keep in mind these tips:

    Never sign a contract

    Never pay for rank testing

Observe the contact and sparring drills

Ask to see the teachers lineage

    Good luck.

I'm with capitalc on this one? I have a black belt in tae kwon - do. Under I'T'F and i also no of the black belt sylabus of the W.T.F and these are the only to styles of tae kwon-do. And both of them have black belt syabus's allready set out. You don't make up your own moves that i have ever heard of for any kind of grading in any martial art that i no or heard of. Well not in the 17 years that i have been in martial arts. Apart from that. I can't help.

Here's an idea, why not call it Turon Ta-sot it's Korean for 35! Wish him luck for his grading, I've been assessing gradings for a few years now and the calibre of students is very high. Lo xxx
